National Gymnastics Week underway
January 22, 2010 (Journal Pioneer):
From Victoria to St. John's,
gymnasts of all ages will spring, swing, roll, dance, tumble and
balance at their local gym club this coming week. Gymnastics
Canada and the provincial/territorial federations present the
sixth edition of National Gymnastics Week in communities across
the country from Jan. 18 to 24. Gymnastics P.E.I. will be
celebrating the week with a busy schedule.

WFP ambassador Li Ning helps with Haiti aid
January 22, 2010 (China
Daily):
Retired gymnast and the World Food Programme (WFP) ambassador Li
Ning Thursday said he would pay for five humanitarian flights to
bring food and other relief materials to earthquake-stricken
Haiti. The Olympic gold medalist said the donation of 1 million
yuan (146,500 U.S. dollars) would cover the cost of the flights
from Panama to Port-Au-Prince, capital of the Caribbean nation. >

Guelzec to Begin UEG Presidency
January 22, 2010
(International Gymnast):
Former French Olympic gymnast Georges Guelzec will
take over as president of the European Gymnastics Union (UEG) on
Jan. 23. Guelzec defeated former president Dimitrios Dimitropoulos
of Greece on Nov. 7, 2009, 24 votes to 22. A native of Nantes,
France, the 62-year-old Guelzec has experienced gymnastics at

Sho Nakamori: 'My long term goal is the 2012
Olympics. That hasn't changed at all'

Six months after tearing his ACL at July's Japan Cup, 2007 World
team alternate Sho Nakamori is working his way back into
competitive form. After a stellar junior career that included a
pair of J.O. National titles, Nakamori broke through in the senior
division in 2007, placing third all-around at the U.S.
Championships and being named alternate to the World team.

new meet for up-and-coming gymnasts

Olympic gymnastics champion, Nastia Liukin has traveled the world,
hobnobbed with celebrities, even walked the runway at New York's
Fashion Week. But she can still remember going through that
awkward phase that's a part of life for pretty much every teenage
girl. Gymnastics helped her cope with it, giving her something of
her own and boosting her confidence, and Liukin is hoping to share
that message.

Indian gymnasts practise with faulty equipment

Commonwealth Games are just a few months away and India's top
sportspersons are getting ready for the mega event. But the
gymnasts have been forced to train with old and faulty equipments.
The gymnastics camp at
the ongoing Senior National Championship in Tamil Nadu' s Erode
shows the equipment they train with is far from world class, and
not fit for champions. Coaches say this is affecting the
performance of the gymnasts.

Paralysed former gymnast insists: I will walk
again

gymnast who was paralysed when a lighting structure fell on her
during a party in Qawra is determined that she will walk again.
Indeed, stem cell treatment she started in Moscow is already
working "miraculously" for Vlada Kravchenko, who is now able to
use her hips and thighs to crawl after suffering the horrific

Olympic finalist on rings, but also bronze medalist at the
Europeans in Lausanne (Switzerland) in 2008, Robert Stanescu
already became a reference name in the gymnastics world. Given his
results on rings in the last two years, Robert becomes the next
Romanian champion on this event, after Dan Grecu and Dan Burinca.

the Judge’s Chair” in an effort to increase awareness about how
some of the top routines in the world are being judged on both the
men’s and women’s sides. My main focus will be on the D-Score
(Difficulty Score), since that is certainly the most complex and
the most difficult for even us seasoned fans to calculate in our

Gymnastics world mourns coaching legend
January 16, 2010 (Goupstate):
Spartanburg County residents are mourning the death of a local
gymnastics legend. Tamara V. Kluchnikova Kozeev lost her battle
with cancer on Tuesday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She
was 63. Born in Ulyanovsk, Russia, the former gymnast and Olympic
coach for the Soviet Union women's national team immigrated to
Spartanburg in 1992 with her husband, Anatoly Kozeev. >

International federations embrace AIPS in the
city of sport
January 22, 2010 (AIPS):
The presence of officials from more than 20 International
Federations, many of them based in Lausanne, was the highlight of
the two-day AIPS Euro-delegates meeting held in the Olympic
Capital and AIPS headquarters city this week.
“Just like competing in
sport, AIPS has today reached its peak at the right time and in
the right moment,” commented AIPS President Gianni Merlo.

Completes First Visit

Nawal El Moutawakel,
the Chair of the
International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Coordination Commission
for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, has completed her first
visit as Chair to the future host city. Arriving in Rio only four
days after being appointed, El Moutawakel, who was accompanied by
the
IOC’s
Olympic Games Executive Director - Gilbert Felli - had
three days of meetings in Rio with local organisers and government
officials, as well as getting a firsthand look at some of the

UN blame homeless deaths in New Delhi on
Commonwealth Games

United Nations independent human rights expert today blamed the
Commonwealth Games for the increasing number of homeless people
dying in New Delhi due to a cold wave. Ten homeless people have
lost their lives in the past month in the Indian capital, while
some 100 people have reportedly died in northern India due to the
freezing cold over the last few weeks. >

Haitian sport hit by earthquake tragedy
January 20, 2010 (Sport
Business): At
least 30 members of Haiti’s football federation, and at least
seven Haitian Olympic athletes were victims of the earthquake
which hit the country. The Associated Press reports that a
Caribbean Football Union representative visited Haiti at the
weekend and reported back to football’s world governing body that
Haiti’s football federation president Yves Jean Bart had survived,
but that many other members of the federation died when its
headquarters collapsed. >

Guangzhou residents celebrate 300-day countdown
to Asian Games

thousands of residents in Guangzhou gathered at Huangpu Sports
Centre Stadium on Saturday to celebrate the 300-day countdown to
the 16th Asian Games. Xu Ruisheng, Executive Deputy Secretary

and Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, was present at the celebration.

Asian trio on IOC’s Rio 2016 commission
January 13, 2010 (OCASIA):
A trio of Asian IOC Members have been appointed to the Rio 2016
Coordination Commission. Timothy Fok (Hong Kong), Nat Indrapana
(Thailand) and Wu Ching-Kuo (Chinese Taipei) are among a 17-strong
team led by Ms. Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco. The commission
will be responsible for assisting the Rio 2016 Organising
Committee during the period leading up to the Olympic Games, as
well as monitoring the progress of preparations.
