YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

The I. YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES 2010 take place from August 14 - 26 in Singapore and are a novelty in the Olympic history. Initiated by Dr. Jacques Rogge, the European Olympic Committees launched the "European Youth Olympic Days" (EYOD, now called EYOF ) - the only multi sports event on this continent. This event is a novelty in the history also of the worldwide Olympic movement now, for the first time. About 3,600 young athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 from aproximately 200 nations came together in Singapore.
Amongst them were also the participants of the 3 Olympic gymnastics disciplines, whose competitions are equiped with the apparatus of the Dutch company "Janssen-Fritsen" .

*fig --: The F.I.G. office published today, that a severe warning has been issued to Romanian gymnast Marian Dragulescu for failing to comply with the procedures governing the fight against doping.
Three indictments were filed against the gymnast, namely concerning violation of a rule stipulating that a gymnast must announce his return to competition after a retirement, a communication made regarding Marian Dragulescu by his national federation on December 30, 2008. Because of his failure to comply with this rule, Dragulescu was not taken into account for out of competition testing since he was not on the 2009 FIG RTP (Registered Testing Pool) official list.

Mattie Larson of Los Angeles, Calif., won the senior all-around competition at the 2010 CoverGirl Classic at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Ill..
In the junior session earlier at Saturday, July 24, 2010 Pacific Rim Championships junior all-around champion Jordyn Wieber of DeWitt, Mich., won the junior all-around title.
With an all-around score of 57.150, Larson, who trains at All Olympia Gymnastics, claimed the senior all-around title with a second place finish on floor exercise (14.600) and a fourth place finish on vault (14.700).
Cincinnati Gymnastics’ Amanda Jetter of Milford, Ohio, was second in the all-around at 56.800. Illinois native Mackenzie Caquatto of Naperville/Legacy Elite Gymnastics, finished third in the all-around, posting a 56.450, and landed in second on vault (14.850) and bars (15.050).

The Youth Olympic Flame arrived today in Berlin, Germany, on its mission to spread the spirit of Olympism to as many youth around the world as possible. This marked the first stop on the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame that will span five continents as a prelude to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
Upon its arrival from Ancient Olympia, Greece, where the first Youth Olympic Flame was lit the day before, the Flame made a brief visit at Siemensstadt, a famous sports club in Berlin built in 1984.
Over 650,000 visitors visit the Siemensstadt sports club a year, and when the Flame made its stop, it was greeted by youth engaging in basketball, tennis and volleyball.
The Flame then made its way by boat on the Spree River, through the Haus der Kulturen der Welt - one of the leading European centres of contemporary art and culture - and towards Pariser Platz, where the famous Brandenburg Gate is located for the City Celebration held for the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame.

The Houston Chronical reports this week, that the 2004 all-around Olympic gold medalist Paul HAMM (27) plans to return to competition 2011 January in hopes of qualifying for the USA Gymnastics men's national team and competing at the 2012 London Olympics.
Paul Hamm said to the media, that he has left his job in the financial industry and hopes to train at his old gym in his hometown of Waukesha, Wis., (USA) or at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. His likely first competition would be next January at the 2011 Winter Cup meet in Las Vegas.

In a meeting in Ottawa, Canada the Technical Committee of mens artistic gymnastics of the World Gymnastics Federation F.I.G. acknowledged the "new floor element" of the European Champion Matthias FAHRIG from Halle, and gave this element the highest possible degree of difficulty - "G" (Value: 0.7). Hannah WHELAN, new British Champion

British Champion City of Liverpool’s Hannah Whelan produced a superb performance to take the 2010 Senior Women’s All-around title from the Guildford Spectrum.
Beijing Olympian Hannah, having recently returned to action after a wrist injury took the most prestigious honour of the British calendar scoring 57.800.
Hannah said: “ I’m really, really happy! I didn’t have any aims or expectations coming into the competition. So to then go out and win is just incredible. I’ve had injury problems so to then return and become British Champion is fantastic.”
The Silver medal went to Heathrow ‘s Nicole Hibbert (55.850) who competed in the Senior competition for the 1st time after being crowned Junior Champion in 2009.

Four Junior National Squad members are off to Germany at Tuesday to represent Australia.
<< Georgia-Rose Brown (VIS), Angela Donald (WAGA), Amelia McGrath (MLC) and Emma Nedov (Epping YMCA) are all members of the AIS/GA Olympic Junior Squad and were selected to attend the III. Pre Olympic Youth Cup 2010 in Germany to be held weekend.
Accompanying the team are coaches Mikhail Barabach, Michelle De Highden, John Hart and Guiping Wang. The Victorian Womens High Performance Centre have also two gymnasts competing at the event, Alex Eade and Grace Claringbold who will be accompanied by coach Tracey Penaluna.

Today, one week after the men's events the 31st WOMEN's EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS Artistic Gymnastics - including the juniors - finished at the "National Indoor Stadium" of Birmingham. From Wednesday onwards the juniors fighted for the team, all-around and the apparatus titles, the elite gymnasts for team and also the apparatus titles on Sunday.
At last Russia won two gold medals (Team and vault), but Beth TWEDDLE lead the British host to silver in team competition and also to two golden medals at the apparatus finals bars and floor ans so the Brits came on second place in nation ranking, first time in front of Romania...!

The International Olympic Committee stripped China of its 2000 Olympic Games women’s team bronze medal because one of its athletes did not meet the age requirement. The IOC said it will award the team bronze medal to the United States, which originally finished fourth in the team competition.
The decision, made during the IOC’s Executive Board meetings in Dubai, UAE, was based on the recommendation of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

With the team of Fabian Hambüchen, Philipp Boy, Marcel Nguyen, Matthias Fahrig and Eugen Spiridonov there was a clear country win with 269,000 : 246,600 by the German gymnasts in the Anhalt-Arena to Dessau.
Infront of a thrilled audience of over 1.800 people it was a little bumpy on the first apparatus for the hosts (on the floor) - and the Polish started pretty well on the rings, vault and bars (131,950 by half-time) - but in the comparison of the apparatus they clearly strode infornt of the others.
Especally with the bars and a great high bar round the German men flew past the Polish guests up to an end difference of - 22,400 points...

After Montreal, Cottbus and Doha the World Cup -Gymnastics Circus was stationed in Paris this weekend. For the 17th time the mens and womens competitions "FRANCE INTERNATIONAL" took place in the traditional Omnisports-hall of Paris-Bercy - where the first singles gymnastics world championships took place in 1992. With 148 registered participants in total - 53 women and 95 men - from 35 countries in total, these competitions had quantitatively and qualitatively the best World Cup participation ever - honored by an audience of over 5000!
The French hosts got three finals wins with Cyril Tommasone (pommel horse), Samir Aid Sait (rings) and Youna Dufournet (vault). The Spanish Isaac Botella won the vault in the mens, best on the beam was Wu, Lifang from China, her country woman He, Kexin won the uneven bars and Englands star Beth Tweddle triumphed on the floor.

Men’s gymnastics national team of Romania won the competition against the Netherlands team held in Hellend, within the preparations for the 29th European Championships, organized in Birmingham from April 21 to 25, 2010.
Romania’s team accumulated 256.85 points compared to 255.50 of the Netherlands.

Women’s artistic gymnastics team of Romania won the competition against France’s team, held in French Arques locality, within the preparations for the 29th European Championships, organized in Birmingham from April 21st to 25th 2010.
Romania’s artistic gymnastics senior team won the competition against France by 167.800 points to 166.550 points.
As for Women’s Individual, Diana Chelaru ranked first, with a total of 57.550 points. Chelaru got the highest mark for jumps – 14.700.
Romania ranked on top also with its junior team, with a total of 162.200 points, followed by France, 160.500 points and Great Britain, 157.950 points.
As regards Women’s Individual All-Around Larisa Iordache finished on top, with 55.600 points.

After the womens win on Saturday Hungary mens gymnasts have gone up another level today:
The Hungarian National team won the „1st Austrian Team Open Artistic Gymnastics“ in Vienna-Brigittenau with a clear advantage ahead of Upper Austria (248.850 to 242.650) and the Hungarian Junior-National team (241.750).
The Team Upper Austria therewith defended its national team-state title ahead of Vorarlberg (238.400) and Vienna (226.750).

The first international opening ceremony of the Austrian Team Country championship offered high quality gymnastics just a month before the European Championship in Birmingham:
Hungarys European Championship-squad pushed itself - at the premiere of the"I. AUSTRIAN TEAM OPEN" in Vienna-Brigittenau - with 150.650 ahead of Austria/Vorarlberg (146.800) and Austria/Tirol (143.950) – who therewith won Gold and Silver at the national team country championship which took place at the same time.
Like Austria also Hungary and Israel tested their European Championship squads, and Canada came along as an overseas guest.
The „1st Austrian Team Open Artistic Gymnastics“ will end tomorrow on Sunday (28.3.) with the men applicant:

On Tuesday the 23rd of March 2010, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Singapur started the „Young Ambassador“ program.
30 youngsters from all over the world , each nominated by their National Olympic Committee, should help to advertise for the first Olympic Youth Games in August in Singapur and should support the participants, before and during the games and above all during the participation in the Cultural and Educational Program (CEP).
The goal of the Cultral and Educational Program is to inspire young people to engage themselves socially and to learn the values of sports and of the Olympics.

Shortly after her World Cup participation in Cottbus also Maike Roll (TG Söllingen), decided to no longer be part of the German gymnastics federation! Her reason being too much stress particularly in selection processes. She will however remain part of her state team TG Karlsruhe-Söllingen for the coming Team start in Cologne.

*baga: -- The majority of the top British, Romanian and German Artistic gymnastics women used the 5-day Friendly International training camp and competition at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire, Great Britain, to check their preparation on the road to the European Championships in Birmingham (28 April-2 May 2010). Romania, multiple Olympic, World and European Champions, tested their rejuvenated team in this relaxed Friendly International on Saturday, 20 March, putting together a total of 221.850 points against 221.600 for Great Britain.
Germany entered only three Senior gymnasts, with Marie-Sophie Hindermann having to rest after sustaining a slight injury during training on Friday.

From March 13 to 16 the 11th Asian Junior Championships 2010 of Artistic and Trampoline Gymnastics took place in Chiba, Japan.
Altogether 12 female and male gymnasts representing 16 nations took part at these events, which were also the official qualifications for the upcoming I. Olympic Youth Games, which will be held in August in Singapore.
In Artistic Gymnastics the Japanese hosts were the winner in team but also at the all-around events ...

According to a report by the "Japanese Association for the promotion of Sports and Health" the Olympic Medal belonging to the German gymnast Hermann Weingärtner from Frankfurt - from the first Olympic Games 1896 in Athens was stolen from a museum in Tokio - by who, is unknown. The winner plakets (the grading Gold / Silver / Bronze were only introduced later) was taken from an unlocked, unguarded vitrine.

Flowers and goodbye

She bravely smiled to the audience, but with a sore heart, as the member of the German Gymnastics Team Jenny BRUNNER said goodbye and stepped out of the German Team Masters 2008, TuS Chemnitz-Altendorf, and left the rows of the German national team. It is a nice gesture, that the German Gymnastics Federation gave a leaving ceremony to Jenny, infront of the attactive auditorium - as always, on Sunday in the Lausitz Arena at the World Cup in Cottbus, in which Jenny was just recently active herself and was in the finals on the floor and uneven bars.
The flowers for her goodbye, were given to her by the DTB-Vice-President Rosemarie Napp (Foto, le.). DTB-Sportsdirector Wolfgang Willam acknowledged the achievements of the now 20 year old, who had already outed her wish to step out of the active professional sports .

The second world cup event of artistic gymnastics of the new 2010 circuit finished on Sunday with the second part of final events in Cottbus, Germany.
It was the 34th anniversary of this traditional event.
Altogether 108 participants (72 men, 36 women) representing 24 different nations arrived in Cottbus .
At the end of the Sunday's finals the winners came from five different countries on men's and four different nations on the women's side...
The most successful gymnast was the Canadian Kristina Vaculik, winning on the uneven bars and on the floor, together with the Polish Marta Pihan-Kulesza...

Kristina GORYUNOVA suspended ...

The Russian media reported, that the rising Russian gymnast Kristina GORYUNOVA will not be able to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games after being suspended for one year by the Russian Gymnastics Federation, this week for using banned medication. Local media wrote that the samples taken from the 17-year-old at the national championships in November 2009, contained traces of the forbidden substance (one of furosemide analogues).
Goryunova justified the results by saying she was taking a food additive trying to lose weight, adding she did not know that it contained the banned substance.

For the 5 time in a row, JAPANS young league won in Berlin in the big sports hall at the Weißenseer Weg also the "15. International Junior Team Cup 2020" and showed off all its new talent:
With 247,350 points the Japanese quartett won ahead of SPAIN I (245,750) and SWITZERLAND (244,350). Like in the previous year the host assortment of the SC Berlin managed the best German representatives on 7th position out of 26 teams in total from 17 nations and 3 continents.
A strong impression was made especially by the Spaniards, who had the singles winner of the Juniors Fabian Gonzales.

When on March 6th 2010 in Berlin the "15th INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR-TEAM-CUP 2010" will take place, the city, which will also be the host of the European Championships 2011, can expect the performances of 27 teams from 17 nations and three continentes. It again will be a competition of the best junior gymnasts from all over the World. Some of them will be seen again on the winners' podium at World Champions, Olympic Games or other high-level international events in the next Olympic cycle.

DONG Fanxiao (CHN) at a competition in 2000

The Chinese gymnast DONG Fanxiao should not have been allowed to participate in the Olympic Summergames in Sydney in 2000, because she was too young, established the World Gymnastics Federation FIG.
Then, 10 years ago, Dong Fanxiao was 14 years ofl and not 17 years old, as she had stated.
According to the FIG-Disciplinary Commission this is a violation of the rules. Dongs Olympics-results were invalidated. At the moment there is a FIG petition at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which states that the Bronze medal in the Chinese Team assessment should not be recognized. Therewith the USA would move up to third place. Zhang Haifeng, speaker of the Olypmic Committee of China, regards the situation as being "history" in the Chinese media. "This happened in the year 2000. We are now writing the year 2010".

* usa gymn. fed: -- University of Oklahoma's Chris Brooks of Houston won the all-around title at the 2010 Winter Cup Challenge at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Sports Center. The all-around and individual event champions were determined with a combined two-day score. In addition, 17 men were named to the U.S. Senior National Team.
Chris Brooks, who lead the all-around after the first day, finished with a two-day score of 175.800. He also won an individual event title on horizontal bar (31.100).
2009 U.S. all-around champion and 2008 Olympic horizontal bar silver-medalist Jonathan Horton of Houston/Cypress Gymnastics was second with 174.750. Horton posted an event high all-around score during the final round on Saturday night.

This weekend in Montreal the F.I.G. opened their World Cup - series 2010 of rhythmic gymnastics. Seven more will follow and in addition to that 8 Grand Prix's, various continental events and one World Championships: 17 (!) top events!
On the first weekend in March in artistic gymnastics will be started a series of even 12 (!) World Cup competitions, during only one year! In addition to that there will be the 10th European Championships and the 7th World Championships - since 2000 during this new millennium alone (!)...
A flood of champions is being "produced" there!

Jani Tanskanen (FIN) for Men’s Artistic, Nastia Liukin (USA) for Women’s Artistic, Vera Sessina (RUS) for Rhythmic, Dmitri Poliaroush (BLR) for Trampoline, Anna Macanita (POR) for Aerobic and Sabrina Hegele (GER) for Acrobatic. The new president holds a seat on the Executive Board and one on the FIG Council as a representative of the Federation’s athlete body.
Jani Tanskanen is the Director of Men’s Artistic within the Finnish Gymnastics Federation, and was an active, national A list gymnast until 2008. Among his many achievements is a Horizontal Bar Gold at the World Championships in Lausanne in 1997.

From today on, the former French Olympic gymnast Georges GUELZEC (62) takes over as president of the European Gymnastics Union (UEG).
Guelzec defeated former president Dimitrios Dimitropoulos of Greece on 2009, November 7. A native of Nantes (FRA) Guelzec has experienced gymnastics at every level. After ten years on the French national team, including appearances in European (1969, '73) and Worlds (1970), as well as the 1972 Munich Olympics, Guelzec worked for 35 years as a coach at La Nantaise, but also an international judge and held positions within the French Federation and the UEG and was elected 2003 as vice-president.

The Italian Gymnastics Federation announced the retirement of Artistic gymnast Andrea COPPOLINO. The 30 year old specialist on still rings was a member of the Italian national team since 1996, boasting an exemplary sporting career. Coppolino competed in a total of eight Worlds and won the bronze on rings on two occasions: 2001 in Ghent (BEL) and 2003 in Anaheim (USA), where he tied with team-mate Matteo Morandi.
A 4th place on rings at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games marked the climax of Coppolino’s international gymnastics career. Having appeared six times on the European stage, the Italian gymnast swept the 2005 title in Debrecen (HUN), ranked third in 2006 in Volos (GRE), and took home Silver in 2007 from Amsterdam (NED), all on Rings.

Jack Günthard (SUI) 90 Years!

The Swiss Olympic high bar champion of Helsinki 1952, Jack GÜNTHARD celebrates his 90th birthday on 2010, January 8th.
Born 1920, Jack Günthard can be proud of his long career as a gymnast, which started in 1936. The double European Champion on parallel bars and horizontal bar (1957, Paris) was also a member of the UEG Men’s Technical Committee from 1982 to 1993. As recognition for his commitment, he was awarded the title “UEG Honorary Member”.
He dedicated his entire life to training and education, as coach of clubs or of the national teams of Switzerland (1966 to 1979) and Italy (1958 to 1964).

Kevin Mazeika is the new national team coordinator of U. S. men's gymnastics team. Mazeika led the U. S. men to back-to-back Olympic gymnastics medals for the first time. In his new role, he will manage and supervise the technical side of the junior and senior men's national teams. Martha Karolyi has a similar job with the women's national team.
Mazeika coached the U.S. team at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. The Americans won the silver in Athens, their first team medal in 22 years and first at a non-boycotted games since 1932. They were surprise bronze medalists in Beijing, making the podium despite losing 2004 Olympic champion Paul Hamm and his twin brother Morgan to injuries.

Vanessa Ferrari ... in the Army, now!

2006 World all-around champion Vanessa FERRARI has joined the Italian army, the Italian Gymnastics Federation reported.
Ferrari, who turned 19 on November 10, has been absent from competition since having surgery in June to help ease problems with her right achilles tendon.
After a disappointing 2008 Olympic Games, where she was out of shape due to injuries, Ferrari won silver on floor at the 2009 European Championships in Milan, a medal she dedicated to the army. Right before having surgery to drain fluid from her Achilles, Ferrari won the 2009 Italian National Championship. She dedicated that victory to her tendon.

Winner of the artistic gymnastics female junior all-around event was the U.S. junior champion and this year's winner of the Tyson American Cup, Jordyn Wieber. Wieber won the title by nearly 4 points above Yvette Moshage, from Netherlands (Netherlands). On third came the teammate of Jordyn Wiber, Kamerin Moore. Romanian Larisa Iordache finished fourth ( she failed on uneven bars: 10.300, only).

The former Alstertrophy found it's worthy continuation in the form of the I. HAMBURG GYMNASTICS 2009, an invitation championship for international teams of women's gymnastics this weekend.
Best team in the final round was the team of the Royal Dutch Gymnastics Federation (NED) with 100,70 points, ahead of the Dynamo School of Gymnastics London (GBR; 99,50 points) ant the team from St. Petersburg (RUS; 96,85 points).
Fourth was the team from Africa, Cairo Zone Team 1 (EGY; 90,75 points). The lucky Wild-Card- winner from the Hamburger Gymnastics of 1816, lead by the Federal Chamber members Louisa Knapp and Jennifer Kießlich landed on 5th place.

She'll be missing in action for awhile, but she's not giving up.

Also the DOSB-vice-president Eberhard GIENGER got an idea of the level of development of the British, as also the new consultant for apparatus and trampoline gymnastics of the German gymnastics federation, Ann-Katrin KNITTEL, who was intensively involved with the structures and possibilities on site, and is working on offering, also in Germany, ambitious training and apparatus for the three olympics disciplines. This seminar, which was initiated by the ex-gymnast Ronny Ziesmer as the patron and supported by his partners, the Daimler Corporation , will surely find supporters and followers...

*UEG-press--: The delegates of the 47 UEG federations have elected with 24 votes Georges Guelzec, France, actual vice – president, to the presidency for the next period 2010 to 2013.
The leaving president Dimitrios Dimitropoulos has received 22 votes.
Four candidates were running for the 3 mandates of vice-presidency.
The new presidential board of the UEG will be formed, in addition to the President Georges Guelzec, of
- Mrs. Malin Eggerts Forsmark SWE (new),
- Mr. Ruedi Hediger SUI (new) and Paul Garber GBR (re-elected).
