returning to competition and making a run at the 2012 Olympics in
London. Her father, Doug Johnson, tells The Des Moines Register
she began training at her hometown gym, Chow's Gymnastics in West
Des Moines, about a week ago and is working out about every other

Mazeika is new coordinator of US men's gym team
December 22, 2009
(Associated Press): Kevin Mazeika is
the new national team coordinator of U.S men's gymnastics team.
Mazeika led the U.S. men to back-to-back Olympic gymnastics medals
for the first time. In his new role, he will manage and supervise
the technical side of the junior and senior men's national teams.
Martha Karolyi has a similar job with the women's national team.

Chinese gymnasts accused of being underage have
hearing
December 21, 2009
(Associated Press): A decision on
whether two Chinese gymnasts were old enough to compete at the
Sydney Olympics is expected in February after the athletes
appeared before a disciplinary commission. Dong Fangxiao and Yang
Yun, along with their parents and two Chinese gymnastics
officials, met Saturday and Sunday with the International
Gymnastics Federation's disciplinary commission. Dong and Yang are
suspected of being as young as 14 in Sydney, where China won the
bronze medal and Yang also won a bronze on uneven bars. >>

(WADA): With Togo and Georgia having
completed their ratification procedures, 130 countries out of the
193 UNESCO Member States have now ratified the International
Convention against Doping in Sport. The new ratifications bring
the percentage of the world population covered by the Convention
to approximately 90%. >>

USOC critics
hail choice of Blackmun as CEO; he gets 4-year deal
January 5, 2010 (Chicago
Tribune): Scott Blackmun clearly is
going to have a honeymoon period when he takes over as chief
executive of the U.S. Olympic Committee in late January.
The most outspoken
critics of the USOC's upper management in the past year had
nothing but good things to say about the decision to hire Blackmun,
which was first reported Tuesday morning by the Tribune. Happiest
were the national sports federation (NGB) leaders who had
excoriated both USOC board chairman Larry Probst and acting CEO
Stephanie Streeter for their failure to communicate with the other
constituent groups in the U.S. Olympic movement. >>

IOC suspends
Kuwait Olympic committee
January 5, 2010 (USA
Today): The IOC has suspended
Kuwait's national Olympic committee because of alleged political
interference by the government. The International Olympic
Committee says the decision was taken by its executive board to
"protect the Olympic movement in Kuwait." The suspension took
effect Jan. 1. The IOC says Kuwait failed to meet a Dec. 31
deadline for amending a law that allows the Gulf state to
interfere in elections of sports organizations. >>

warned that random drugs searches in the Olympic Village at London
2012 would be "utterly disastrous". British Olympic Association

city bids for another Universiade

Russian Volga city of Kazan, the
venue of the 2013 Summer Universiade, has submitted application
for hosting the first European Student Games in 2012. The general
assembly of European University Sports Association (EUSA) decided
to hold the first European Universiade in late December in Vienna.

Brazil is facing a huge infrastructure regeneration challenge
ahead of hosting the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.
The country's airports, roads and railways as well as the sporting
arenas themselves will either be upgraded or re-developed making
