Mazeika is new coordinator of US men's gym team

December 22, 2009 (Associated Press): Kevin Mazeika is the new national team coordinator of U.S men's gymnastics team. Mazeika led the U.S. men to back-to-back Olympic gymnastics medals for the first time. In his new role, he will manage and supervise the technical side of the junior and senior men's national teams. Chinese gymnasts accused of being underage have hearing

December 21, 2009 (Associated Press): A decision on whether two Chinese gymnasts were old enough to compete at the Sydney Olympics is expected in February after the athletes appeared before a disciplinary commission. Dong Fangxiao and Yang Yun, along with their parents and two Chinese gymnastics officials, met Saturday and Sunday with the International Gymnastics Federation's disciplinary commission. Dong and Yang are suspected of being as young as 14 in Sydney, where China won the bronze medal and Yang also won a bronze on uneven bars.  >> Read more …

One Hundred and Thirty Countries Have Now Ratified UNESCO Convention

January 5, 2010 (WADA): With Togo and Georgia having completed their ratification procedures, 130 countries out of the 193 UNESCO Member States have now ratified the International Convention against Doping in Sport. USOC critics hail choice of Blackmun as CEO; he gets 4-year deal

January 5, 2010 (Chicago Tribune): Scott Blackmun clearly is going to have a honeymoon period when he takes over as chief executive of the U.S. Olympic Committee in late January.

The most outspoken critics of the USOC's upper management in the past year had nothing but good things to say about the decision to hire Blackmun, which was first reported Tuesday morning by the Tribune. IOC suspends Kuwait Olympic committee

January 5, 2010 (USA Today): The IOC has suspended Kuwait's national Olympic committee because of alleged political interference by the government. The International Olympic Committee says the decision was taken by its executive board to "protect the Olympic movement in Kuwait." The suspension took effect Jan. 1. Concern over 2012 athletes village drug searches

January 4, 2010 (BBC): Athletes' representatives have warned that random drugs searches in the Olympic Village at London 2012 would be "utterly disastrous". Russia's Volga city bids for another Universiade

January 3, 2010 (Xinhua): Russian Volga city of Kazan, the venue of the 2013 Summer Universiade, has submitted application for hosting the first European Student Games in 2012. The general assembly of European University Sports Association (EUSA) decided to hold the first European Universiade in late December in Vienna.

Boosting Brazil: Infrastructure challenges ahead of major sporting events.

December 22, 2009 (KHL): Construction activity in Brazil will be boosted by a major overhaul of the country's infrastructure in preparation for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. Becca Wilkins reports. Brazil is facing a huge infrastructure regeneration challenge ahead of hosting the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.
