Championships in Japan recently. The 16-year-old gymnast, who was

Bad shoulder
knocks Peszek out of gym worlds
September 16, 2009 (The
Associated Press):
Olympic silver medalist Samantha Peszek is
withdrawing her name for consideration for the world gymnastics
championships to have surgery on her ailing shoulder. Peszek is
the second Olympian to withdraw from world team consideration.
Olympic champion Nastia Liukin pulled out earlier this month,
saying she hadn't had adequate time to train.

Dominates Scherbo Cup

With eight medals, gymnasts from Belarus dominated
the Vitaly Scherbo Cup, held this week in Minsk, Belarus.
All-around winners were Galina Ivanets (Belarus) and Anton Fokin
(Uzbekistan).
Gymnasts from
Canada, France and Switzerland earner five medals in the
competition held in honor of Scherbo, a Minsk native whose storied
career included six gold medals at the 1992 Olympic Games in
Barcelona. Scherbo, who owns a gym in Las Vegas, was inducted into
the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame this spring. >>

success at a world championships is unlikely to be beaten.
The 19-year-old superstar won six
out of six possible gold medals at the world championships in Mie,
Japan. Over the past week she took golds with the Russian team,
with each of the four apparatus (rope, hoop, ball and ribbon) and

Today): Italy
beat Belarus and Russia on Saturday to win the group all-around
event at the rhythmic gymnastics world championships. Italy
finished first in the ribbon and rope discipline and second in the
hoop for a total of 54.400 points. Belarus was second with 54.200
points while Russia finished third with 51.350. >>
