Rule means longer
wait for new junior champ.
DALLAS - AP - Eddie Pells:
Twelve-year-old Kyla Ross won the junior national title Saturday,
a victory that sets her up as one of the young women to watch for
the next four years. Just don't expect to see her much. Ross will
turn 16 in 2012 and eligible for the London Olympics, but a new
international rule will prevent her from competing in senior
events until that year. It means she'll still be a junior in 2011,
which will prevent her from competing at the very important world
championships that precede the Games. >>

Softball and baseball — out, again
BERLIN — Doubtlessly, the International Olympic Committee’s
decision to pass on softball and instead propose rugby and golf
for addition to the 2016 Summer Games will be seen by some
advocates of women’s sport as a setback, a step back, a slap in
the face delivered by the proverbial ol’ boys’ network.

Lamine Diack,
IAAF President answering questions from Sport
Intern
Do you feel
football is sucking the life out of most other sports? (Less
television coverage, less space in newspapers, fewer sponsors) If
so, what can be done about it?
There is no doubt
that football – which was always by far the most popular sport –
has become even more dominant in recent years because of the
explosion of media and commercial interest. Now, there seems to be
football on TV 24 hours a day. FIFA is also extremely active in
supporting it federations. Just taking the example of Senegal, the
football federation has recently built a fine HQ, they receive 1
million dollars every 4 years, and a football academy close to
Dakar is virtually complete.
So in the
short term, it is very difficult to challenge this. It is only by
long term planning, and in the case of athletics, getting
athletics back in the schools from a young age, which will ensure
that in the future, as in the past, kids can be footballers but
they will also be able to do other sports. The grave danger is
when the only sports’ option for youngsters is football, and this
has sadly been the case in recent years. |

IOC Presidency -
The Contenders
Jacques Rogge has announced that he
will not stand for another term as president of the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) beyond 2013. The Belgian is expected to
win another four-year term at the IOC Congress in Copenhagen in
October. However, beyond then, the future of the IOC presidency is
uncertain. The president must be a member of the IOC, but it is
not a requirement that the individual standing for election be a
member of the IOC executive board. Here, The Sport Briefing
takes a look at Rogge’s potential successors.
