Dallas' list of
world-class gymnasts doesn't end with Carly Patterson and Nastia
Liukin. Even the coaching ranks are filled with names that defined
American gymnastics in decades past. Kurt Thomas, the 1976
Olympian and first American man to win a world title, and Kim
Zmeskal Burdette, the first U.S. all-around world champion, will
be honored this week at the
Visa Championships. The event, the most important
annual meet in the U.S., determines the national champions and
national teams. It runs Wednesday through Saturday at American

Get rid of the age requirement
The effusive,
enthusiastic
Bela Karolyi,
who coached
Nadia Comaneci,
Mary Lou Retton,
Dominique Moceanu
and
Kerri Strug
to Olympic fame and glory, can talk unendingly about women's
gymnastics. But when asked about the sport's age requirement,
Karolyi is suprisingly succinct. "Take it away and forget it,"
Karolyi
told The Dallas Morning News in an interview
published Monday. "This is an obvious and blatant discrimination.

Park praises 'sport
for all'!

As the flags of many different countries were raised to the roof
of the arena, Dr. Park Soo-Nam spoke of his pride in taekwondo. Dr.
Park, a Vice President of the World Taekwondo Federation, said the
sport that hails from his home country Korea really provides an
equal opportunity for medals.
"In some Olympic sports, for example horse riding or swimming,
only rich countries can win gold medals," he said. "But in
taekwondo all countries have a chance: big or small, rich or poor.

The 2013 World Games
will be held in Cali, Colombia,
The Colombian
city of Cali will host the 2013 edition of the World Games. This
was announced during this year's edition in Taiwan. The
International World Games Association (IWGA) announced that Cali
was chosen mainly for its "strong presentaion and local support",
which were key factors in the decision.

Tourists flock to Beijing's Olympic stadium even as dust gathers.
At the sprawling
Olympic Park in north-west Beijing, it feels as if the Games never
ended. Every
day tens of thousands of tourists from all over China arrive to
see the Bird’s Nest Stadium and the Water Cube, the twin monuments
to the country’s moment in the spotlight. “The Olympic area has
become one of the must-see destinations in town,” said one taxi
driver. “It’s as popular as the Forbidden City and the Great

IOC Disciplinary
Commissions meet on six cases
IOC Disciplinary Commissions met today in
Lausanne (Switzerland) on six pending doping
cases from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The meetings were
convened to deal with adverse analytical findings for Yudelquis
Maridalin Contreras, Dominican Republic, who placed 5th in the
53kg category in weightlifting; Rashid Ramzi, Bahrain, gold
medallist in 1500m, athletics; Davide Rebellin, Italy, silver
medallist in the individual road race, cycling; Stefan Schumacher,
Germany, individual road race, cycling; Athanasia Tsoumeleka,
Greece, who placed 9th in the 20km race walk, athletics, and Vanja
Parisic, Croatia, 800m, athletics. The IOC Disciplinary Commission
gave the athletes and their representatives the opportunity to be
heard. The decision by the IOC will be taken in due course after
deliberation. >>

IOC will not suspend
the Kuwait Olympic Committee on 1 August
Following a
Memorandum signed with the Kuwaiti Authorities on 15 July 2009 in
Lausanne, a letter was received by the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) from the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour in
Kuwait confirming the decision taken formally by the Kuwaiti
Council of Ministers on 20 July 2009 to ensure that the process of
reviewing the national sports law and regulations in order to make
them compatible with the Olympic Charter and the rules of the
respective International Olympic Sports Federations will be
undertaken with the Kuwaiti Parliament in due course. >>

Outspoken as ever, coach remains key figure in
sport's growth,
Bela Karolyi may
be the best-known name in the world of gymnastics. He led the 1976
Romanian team to a silver medal and helped Nadia Comaneci score
the first 10 in Olympic gymnastics history. He defected to the
United States with his wife, Martha, in 1981 and their ranch in
New Waverly serves as the centre of the United States'

2009 - A technical presentation on "The speed of Usain Bolt" will
form part of the programme of an
IAAF seminar on Broadcasting
Athletics. The seminar, to be held in Berlin on Friday, August 14
has been designed for television commentators, analysts and other
media and has been organised by the IAAF Television Commission
which includes chairman Alex Gilady and members Manuel Romero,
Peter Diamond, Tapani Parm, and Peter Minder.
