Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Alegria’
July 24, 2009 (Timesleader):
With six hours to go before more than 3,000 eyes would be gazed
upon them, performers in Cirque du Soleil’s “Alegria” stretched,
flipped and bent in ways that would make pretzels jealous.
Performers get in some last-minute practice before taking the
stage Wednesday night for the first of five days worth of shows of
Cirque du Soleil’s `Alegria.’ The shows run daily through Sunday.
In a practice area behind the stage, performers loosened up.
Russians, Mongolians, Aussies and Americans shared the mats. Many
have gymnastic backgrounds and some are past world champions. >>

Russia Wins
European Youth Olympic Festival
July 22, 2009
(International Gymnast): Russia won
the men's team title Tuesday as the 10th European Youth Olympic
Festival began in Tampere, Finland. 2008 Junior European silver
medalist David Belyavsky led Russia to victory over Switzerland
and Romania. The men's competition is for gymnasts born in

July 22, 2009 (acrobaticsports.com):
Today was the third and last day of World Games competition in the
acrobatic sports at the Kaohsiung Arena in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The program featured the women's synchronized trampoline event,
the men's and women's double mini-trampoline (DMT) competitions,
as well as the men's group competition in acrobatic gymnastics.

gymnast Smith captures tumbling bronze at World Games
July 21, 2009 (The
Canadian Press): Emily Smith of
Burlington, Ont., captured a bronze medal with a rarely executed
pass in women's tumbling at the World Games on Tuesday. Two-time
world champion Anna Korobeynikova of Russia won with a score of
68.900 points while her teammate Anzhelika Soldatkina took the
silver with 65.000. Smith scored 63.800 to win the bronze, and in
her final routine performed a pass that only two other women have
completed internationally. >>

suspended for 2 years for substances

China Post): Taiwanese gymnast Chiu
Shih-hui was suspended by the Gymnastics International Federation
(FIG) from competing for two years after testing positive for a
banned substance in an announcement by the FIG made yesterday. The
Chinese Taipei Gymnastics Association (CTGA) admits that it acted
negligently in handling the matter, but called on the FIG to
reconsider the matter. >>

Miss Chinese Championships

(International Gymnast): Superstar
Cheng Fei likely will sit out this week's Chinese National
Gymnastics Championships because of ongoing injuries, according to
the Xinhua news agency. Cheng, a five-time world gymnastics
champion and 2008 Olympic gold medalist, has been suffering from a
recurring Achilles' tendon injury. During training for the recent
University Games in Belgrade, Cheng aggravated an injury in her
right knee, Xinhua reported.

Uchimura Win Japan Cup All-Around

(International Gymnast): China's
Huang Qiushuang and Japan's Kohei Uchimura won the all-around
titles Sunday at the Japan Cup in Tokyo. In the women's
competition, Huang scored 58.900 to take the gold over Russian
juniors Aliya Mustafina (58.250) and Tatiana Nabiyeva (57.450). In
the men's competition, Japanese star Uchimura defeated Germany's
Fabian Hambüchen for the title. Japan's Kazuhito Tanaka won the

medalist Kohei Uchimura won the men's all-around event at the
inaugural
Japan Cup on Sunday. Uchimura had high scores of 16.250
and 15.800 in the vault and floor exercise, respectively, en route
to capturing the title with 92.750 points in the 12-man
competition in the final day of the two-day meet at

Taiwan Over Doping Case

(International Gymnast): The Chinese
Taipei Gymnastics Association faces a "heavy fine" over its
handling of a recent doping case, the International Gymnastics
Federation announced Saturday. The FIG reprimanded the federation
for "repeatedly failing to communicate with the FIG" after an
aerobic gymnast tested positive for diuretics in November.

World Games
To Make South American Debut
July 22, 2009 (The
Sport Briefing): The International
World Games Association (IWGA) confirmed on Tuesday that its
flagship event, the World Games, will be taken to South America
for the first time in 2013 when the event is staged in Cali,
Colombia. The IWGA’s president, Ron Froehlick, said that a letter
of intent had been signed between the global body and the Cali
organisers in Kaohsiung in Chinese Taipei, where this year’s World
Games are currently being staged. An official contract between the
two parties will be signed in September.

hopes on trampoline

trampoline champions Karen Cockburn and Rosannagh MacLennan, both
of Toronto, lead a six-member Canadian team into the World Games
in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Monday. Cockburn and MacLennan, in their
first international synchro since winning gold at the 2007 world
championships in Quebec City, are favourites, given their
individual skills. MacLennan is the top ranked solo trampolinist
