medalist Shawn Johnson works with young gymnasts in Southern
Indiana

Johnson — who won the gold for the balance beam
in the 2008 Olympics — came to the New Albany location to work
with children on their balance beam skills as part of a gymnastics
clinic. She also took individual pictures with each participant.
“It’s an honor to be
here and kind of see like where I was a few years ago,” Johnson
said. “It’s crazy to see how far I’ve come and how far all these
girls can go. It’s amazing to see the beginning of it and know
what they’re capable of.”

World Games
highlighted at Olympic Museum in Lausanne
June 19, 2009 (Taiwan News):
Five athletes who will participate in the World
Games 2009 Kaohsiung promoted the games Thursday at the Olympic
Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. The publicity event, touted as
the most vigorous campaign during a one-and-a-half month promotion
of the games in the Olympic capital, was held by the International
World Games Association.
IWGA President Ron Froehlich and Kaohsiung Organizing Committee
Managing Director Liu Shyh-fang presided over the event to
familiarize museum visitors with the games, which are expected to
bring together 4,500 athletes from 91 countries. >>

Beijing
Olympics turned a profit
June 19, 2009 (Sport Business International):
China made a profit of over £89.4
million from the Beijing Summer 2008 Olympics, according to the
country’s National Audit Office.
Reuters reports that the audit office said the 1 billion yuan
profit was more than double the most recent estimate of a 410
million yuan. Athens made a profit of around £95 million. >>

IOC launches
briefings on 2016 bid cities

The IOC launched a different approach to the
Olympic bid process and started the first round of the bid city
briefings in the Olympic capital today. What emerged as an
initially informative event may turn out to be a constant
appointment in the bid process.
All four cities vying for the honor to host the 2016 summer Games
did bid presentations to a good 93 member attendance. Following
the Salt Lake 2002 bid scandal the IOC had abolished bid city
visits making it hard to put forth campaigns for bidding cities.

Kuwaiti NOC With Suspension

The International
Olympic Committee (IOC) is set to suspend the National Olympic
Committee (NOC) of Kuwait due to concerns over political
interference by public authorities. The IOC on Tuesday announced
the suspension, effective from August 1, “in order to protect the
Olympic Movement in Kuwait from interference by the Kuwaiti public
authorities”.

Finance shouldn't drive 2016 Olympic vote

IOC president Jacques Rogge says a legacy for
athletes should outweigh economics as the priority for voters when
choosing which city will host the 2016 Olympics.
Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo will make pitches to
members of the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday in a
crucial test ahead of the October vote on which city hosts the
2016 Summer Games. >>

Mediterranean Games: an appeal for Peace through Sport

On 26 June, when the 3,300 athletes
representing their countries parade at the Opening Ceremony of the
XVI Mediterranean Games, they will launch a passionate appeal for
peace and dialogue throughout the world.
To strengthen this message, the International Committee of
Mediterranean Games (ICMG) is working in association with “Peace
and Sport, L’Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport” for the first
time. The aim of this new partnership is to remind people that,
above and beyond sporting competition, the 2009 Games in Pescara
will be a symbol of what sport can do to strengthen the dialogue
between nations and build foundations for sustainable peace.

Praises Sports' Olympic Efforts

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president
Jacques Rogge has acknowledged that all seven of the sports vying
for a place on the programme for the 2016 Games “have something to
offer”. The IOC Executive Board heard presentations on Monday from
baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby sevens, softball and
squash in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Board will recommend two
sports for inclusion at its next meeting in August, and the IOC
Session will then make a final decision in October. >>

IOC convenes to discuss 2016 bid cities and
sports

being held this week at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne to
further the bid campaigns of the 2016 bid cities and sports. An
intense week of lobbying will be taking place with so many voting
members gathering in one place.
The IOC Executive Board meets on the 15-16 and today the seven
sports vying for a place on the summer Games program will be
