Leonid Arkajew:
Neues Outfit für den erfolgreichsten Trainer der Welt  

Hat sich Leonid Arkajew, der erfolgreichste Trainer der Welt (über 500 internationale Medaillen, mehr als 150 Goldene davon), bei den olympischen Turnwettbewerben in Sydney von der Bühne des Weltturnsports verabschiedet?
In Cottbus stellte er sich in einem neuen Outfit auf der Tribüne vor, im Anzug, mit hellem Hemd und Krawatte. "Ich bin nach Cottbus als Beobachter und Delegierter der FIG gekommen." Nicht mehr? "Natürlich auch als Präsident der russischen Turnföderation." Die Aufgaben als Trainer übertrug er diesmal an seine Sportler. 
So half Swetlana Chorkina ihrer Landsfrau Elena Zamolodchikowa bei ihren Vorbereitungen für den Stufenbarren und bei der Präparation des Gerätes. Sie tat das mit Umsicht und viel Gefühl - und Arkajew beobachtete alles mit Genugtuung von der Tribüne.

 Did Leonid Arkajew, the most successful coach worldwide (over 500 international medals, of which 150 are golden)  say goodbye to the stage of international gymnastics at the Olympic Games in Sydney ?
In Cottbus he appeared with a new outfit on the tribune, wearing a suit,a fair shirt and a tie. " I came to Cottbus as an observer and delegate of the FIG." Nothing else ? "Of course  I came as the president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation as well."
The tasks as coach he would let do his gymnasts this time.
Swetlana Chorkina for example helped her teammate Elena Zamolodchikowa  preparing  for the uneven bars. She did that reasonably and with a lot of heart, being watched by Arkajew on the tribune, who seemed to be quite satisfied.

"Zu Hause stehe ich aber noch jeden Tag in unserem Camp am See im Norden Moskaus in der Turnhalle. Ich betreue dort Männer und Frauen gleichermaßen. Das Klima und die Bedingungen sind dort noch sehr gut - und uns kommen öfters einmal unsere früheren Landsleute besuchen, die jetzt im Ausland leben, aber ab und zu wieder mal mit uns trainieren wollen. So Dmitri Karbonenko aus Frankreich mit seinem Trainer..."

" At home I stand in the gym every day, in our camp at the lake north of Moscow. I work with men and women to the same amount. The climate and the conditions are still very good over there. Our former  countrymates, who are living abroad now, come to visit us sometimes  because they want to train with us, as for example  Dimitri Karbonenko with his coach from France…"

In die Rolle des Trainer-Assistenten schlüpfte Arkajew erstmals bei den Turn-WM 1966 in Dortmund. Er war dort nur der Ersatzmann seiner Riege, obwohl er das Zeug zu mehr hatte. Monate zuvor hatte er nämlich die Einzelwertung beim Ländervergleich DDR - UdSSR in Schwerin gewonnen...^"Aber sein Vorsprung betrug nur 0,05 Punkte", erinnerte sich der damalige DDR-Cheftrainer Karl-Heinz Zschocke, später Präsident des Technischen Komitees Männerturnen in der FIG.

Arkajew played the role of the assisting coach for the first time at the World Championship in Dortmund 1966. He was the substitute in his team only, even having the capacity for much more. His victory in the individual ranking at a competition between the former GDR and Soviet Union in Schwerin had made that clear. " But there was a difference of 0,05 points only.." remembers Karl-Heinz Zschocke, the former GDR head coach and later on president of the Technical Committee of the FIG.
