It was a magnificent moment for
KwaZulu-Natal and the country when Umbilo gymnast Jennifer Khwela
became the first South African to win a gold medal at the
International Gymnastics Federation Artistic Gymnastics World Cup
Series in Doha, Qatar, this week. The quiet 18-year-old beat 67
gymnasts from around the world in the women's vault on Tuesday,
dominating in the qualification round on Monday. She went on to
win the bronze medal in the beam category, and came in sixth on
the floor. >

China on top of the world

Chinese gymnasts yet again hogged the limelight by plundering four
gold medals on the final day of the Third Artistic Gymnastics FIG
World Cup yesterday.
The Chinese brigade topped the
medals table with six gold medals, three silver and bronze medals
each for a total of 11 medals. In all there were 10 golds at stake
in his edition of the World Cup.

Jennifer Khwela from Umbilo in Durban claimed the gold medal in
the women’s vault yesterday at the International Gymnastics
Federation (FIG’s) Artistic Gymnastics World Cup A competition.
Khwela’s achievement came as no surprise as she qualified first in
the vault, fractionally ahead of Croatian Tijana Tkalcec. She
dominated the vault qualification round, where her landings were

event. China’s other medals winners on the second day were
Zhendong Dong (men’s Pommel Horse bronze) and Liufang Wu (women’s

Jordan, South Africa Win First World
Cup Titles

Jordan's Ali Al Asi and South
Africa's Jennifer Khwela made history with their nation's first
gymnastics World Cup titles at the Doha World Cup held Tuesday. Al
Asi, 22, won the gold medal on still rings, a first for a
Jordanian gymnast. He has two previous World Cup silvers,
including a recent second place at the Gymnix World Cup in
Montreal.
Khwela won women's vault, the first World Cup title
for a South African gymnast.

Qatar’s young gymnasts are hoping to qualify for the final stages
of the Third Doha Artistic Gymnastics FIG World Cup which will get
under way at the Aspire Dome today. The three-day event has
attracted some of the world’s best gymnasts and also includes
talented local gymnasts. Qatar’s Nasser Al Hamad, who reached the
finals in one of the men’s categories last year when the event was

Jacques Rogge vows tough line on

Committee president Jacques Rogge on Wednesday vowed a tough line
on anyone taking drugs or lying about their age at this year's

registration scheme set up as the first step for would-be
