Male gymnasts in London for world championships

Top gymnastics competition coming to DCU

October 5, 2009 (telegram.com): Bela Karolyi, the international gymnastics coach, was at the DCU Center today to announce plans to hold a major gymnastics competition at the arena in March. The Tyson American Cup, slated for March 6, will feature the world's top gymnasts in an all-around competition.

Age probe of Chinese gymnasts ongoing

October 5, 2009 (Associated Press): A ruling on whether China competed with two underage gymnasts at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney has been pushed back until at least next year. Sloan headlines US women's team for worlds

October 4, 2009 (USA Today): Olympic silver medalist and current U.S. all-around champion Bridget Sloan headlines the women's team that will compete at this month's World Gymnastics Championships in London. Sloan, of Pittsboro, Ind., won her first U.S. all-around title, as well as the uneven bars and floor exercise, at the national championships in August. Former world champ Memmel quits world bid

October 2, 2009 (AFP): Chellsie Memmel, the 2005 world all-around champion, has withdrawn from the selection process for the US team that will compete at the world championships, USA Gymnastics announced Friday. IOC chief Rogge re-elected until 2013

October 9, 2009 (Reuters): Jacques Rogge was re-elected as president of the International Olympic Committee for a second term until 2013 on Friday. Record-breaking $3.8bn TV revenues for Olympics

October 8, 2009 (Sport Business): The International Olympic Committee has earned a record $3.8 billion in television revenues from the 2010 to 2012 Olympic Games package, a $1.2 billion increase from the 2006 to 2008 cycle.

London told to choose 2012 venues

October 7, 2009 (BBC): The International Olympic Committee has told London 2012 organisers they need to finalise venues for badminton and rhythmic gymnastics at the Games. The sports were initially set to be held in a temporary arena, but could now be housed in existing facilities.

IOC to mull tougher anti-doping requirements

October 5, 2009 (Associated Press): Countries could be barred from hosting the Olympics, starting with the 2018 games, if they don’t have laws that empower police to raid and investigate those suspected of helping athletes use performance-enhancing drugs.

The value of such police powers was driven home to the International Olympic Committee by the 2006 Turin games. Rome And Venice To Bid For 2020 Olympics

October 4, 2009 (The Sport Briefing): The Italian cities of Rome and Venice have announced they will bid to host the 2020 Olympics. The Mayors of both cities announced their intentions after the 2016 Games were awarded to Rio de Janeiro on Friday. Madrid Mayor Coy Over 2020 Bid

October 4, 2009 (The Sport Briefing): Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon refused to comment on the possibility of the Spanish capital making a third successive bid to host the Olympics after Rio de Janeiro beat the city in the final round of voting for the 2016 Games on Friday.
