gymnastics competition coming to DCU

Bela Karolyi, the international gymnastics coach, was at the DCU
Center today to announce plans to hold a major gymnastics
competition at the arena in March. The Tyson American Cup, slated
for March 6, will feature the world's top gymnasts in an
all-around competition.

Age probe of Chinese gymnasts ongoing

(Associated Press): A ruling on
whether China competed with two underage gymnasts at the 2000
Olympic Games in Sydney has been pushed back until at least next
year. A disciplinary commission of the International Gymnastics
Federation told that group's executive committee, which met Sept.
23-25, that it has yet to finish its investigation. >>

Sloan headlines US women's team for worlds
October 4, 2009 (USA
Today): Olympic silver medalist and
current U.S. all-around champion Bridget Sloan headlines the
women's team that will compete at this month's World Gymnastics
Championships in London. Sloan, of Pittsboro, Ind., won her first
U.S. all-around title, as well as the uneven bars and floor
exercise, at the national championships in August. She was a
member of the squad that won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

champ Memmel quits world bid

Chellsie Memmel, the 2005 world
all-around champion, has withdrawn from the selection process for
the US team that will compete at the world championships, USA
Gymnastics announced Friday. Memmel, 21, was part of the American
women's squad that took silver in team competition at last year's
Beijing Olympics, but abandoned her bid to compete at this year's
worlds later this month in London. >>

re-elected as president of the International Olympic Committee for
a second term until 2013 on Friday. Rogge, who ran unopposed, took
over in 2001 from Juan Antonio Samaranch as the eighth president
of the IOC since the organisation was founded in 1894, two years

Record-breaking $3.8bn TV revenues for Olympics

Olympic Committee has earned a record $3.8 billion in television
revenues from the 2010 to 2012 Olympic Games package, a $1.2

of this IOC session and congress in Copenhagen. He had been

IOC to mull
tougher anti-doping requirements

(Associated Press): Countries could
be barred from hosting the Olympics, starting with the 2018 games,
if they don’t have laws that empower police to raid and
investigate those suspected of helping athletes use
performance-enhancing drugs.
The value of such police
powers was driven home to the International Olympic Committee by
the 2006 Turin games. Italian police, acting on information from
the IOC, raided the Austrian cross country and biathlon team
lodgings and seized a large amount of doping products and

of Rome and Venice have announced they will bid to host the 2020
Olympics. The Mayors of both cities announced their intentions
after the 2016 Games were awarded to Rio de Janeiro on Friday.
Giovanni Petrucci, the president of the Italian Olympic Committee
(CONI), believes the decision to award the 2016 edition to Rio in
Brazil has made it more likely the Games will return to Europe in
