Gliding through life
World
rhythmic gymnastic champion Irina Gabashvili combined aesthetics,
athletics and grace
April 12, 2009
(Oregon Live): In film of the event,
Irina Gabashvili glides on the floor with a ball, extends her
legs, twists, throws the ball in the air, spins to the floor and
holds out her hand so the ball lands precisely in her palm on the
first bounce. She extends her arms in swanlike movements that
rival those of Anna Pavlova and Maya Plisetaskaya, then continues,
the ball floating around her, more a partner than a prop. She
finishes with a "Dying Swan" pose. The performance cinched the
gold medal in the 1979 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in
London. Irina, representing the Soviet Union, also received a
bronze medal in the all-around and came in fourth in ribbon and in
clubs.
