In this century's second World Cup qualifying meet, the Cottbus Cup, held this past weekend in Cottbus,
Germany, gymnasts from the first World Cup event, "La Duel," (see March 18 "News Flash") got revenge.

Vault, women:
Mexican Denisse Lopez, second in Switzerland, topped Simona Amanar (Romania) for the vault title in
the winner's final, 9.7 to 9.675, with Russian rocket Yelena Produnova third.

U.bars, women:
World and Olympic bars champ Svetlana Khorkina (Russia) was finally upset on her best event by Ukraine's Viktoria Karpenko, 9.825 to 9.75. (That order was reversed at "La Duel.") China's Liu Xuan was third.
Beam, women:
Khorkina came back on beam, beating "La Duel" champ Andreea Raducan (Romania), 9.825 to 9.8,
while Karpenko earned beam bronze.

Floor, women:
Produnova finally moved into the top spot on floor, where she bested Amanar (9.725 to 9.563). They were backed up by Belarusian Alyona Polozkova in third.

Floor, men:

For the men, Vitaly Rudnitsky (Belarus) bested Romanian Marian Dragulescu on floor (9.363 to 9.238 --
both had errors in the winner's final), leaving world floor champ Alexei Nemov (Russia) in third.

Pommel:
"La Duel" horse champ Marius Urzica (Romania) repeated, topping Belarusian Ivan Ivankov by a hair (9.788 to 9.738), followed by Eric Poujade (France).
On rings,

Hungarian strong man Szilveszter Csollany earned the title over Ivankov, who had topped
Csollany in Switzerland, 9.788 to 9.738, with Greek Dimosthenis Tambakos in third.

Vault, men:
China's Xiao Junfeng notched his second World Cup circuit vault win, besting Latvia's Yevgeny Sapronenko, who boasts a fab Tsuk double back, 9.725 to 9.538, with Gervasio Deferr (Spain) in third.
Bars:

Host Germany won their only medal with Andreas Wecker's parallel bars gold. Wecker topped Slovenia's
Mitja Petkovsek, 9.725 to 9.675, with Petkovsek's teammate, Aljaz Pegan, in third.

High bar:
On pipe, Canadian world medalist Alexander Jeltkov surged ahead of Ukraine's Alexander Beresch in the winner's final, 9.725 to 9.625. Two-time world champ Ivankov, winless at Cottbus, settled for third.
