Memorial Held for Rhythmic World Champion
Gabashvili
March 25, 2009 (International Gymnast): Former world rhythmic
champion Irina Gabashvili died Monday after a five-year
battle with breast cancer. She was 48. Gabashvili had been
coaching in the United States since 2000 and was a coach at
Westside Gymnastics Academy in Portland, Ore. A memorial service
was held Wednesday at Holy New Martyrs of Russia Orthodox Church
in Mulino, Ore. >>

Dutch Most Successful at Cottbus World Cup
March 22, 2009
(International Gymnast): With a total of four medals, The
Netherlands was the most successful nation as the "Tournament of
Masters" World Cup concluded Sunday in Cottbus, Germany. Jeffrey
Wammes gave the Dutch their second gold of the tournament with his
victory on men's vault Sunday, a day after compatriot Yuri van
Gelder won the still rings title. Lieke Wevers (second on balance
beam) and Epke Zonderland (second on high bar) added two more
silver medals to give the Netherlands a boost going into the
European Championships, April 2-5 in Milan. >>

Five Nations Golden at Cottbus World Cup

INTERNATIONAL):Gymnasts from five nations struck gold Saturday
at the first day of finals of the 2009 "Tournament of Masters"
World Cup in Cottbus, Germany. German Olympian Anja Brinker easily
won the gold on uneven bars. Belgium's Aagje Vanwalleghem took
silver on both vault and uneven bars.
Top floor exercise qualifier Kohei Uchimura again defeated
Brazil's Diego Hypolito on men's floor. Belgium's Donna-Donny
Truyens won pommel horse, and World Cup veteran Yuri van Gelder
(Netherlands) won still rings over former world and Olympic

CCTV buys media rights for 2010, 2012
Olympics
March 27, 2009 (Sport Business): The
IOC has agreed a new television deal with China Central Television
(CCTV) for the broadcast rights in China for the Vancouver 2010
and London 2012 Olympic Games. Chinese public-service broadcaster
CCTV acquired the rights across all broadcast platforms, including
free-to-air and pay-television, internet and mobile phone.

Doping-German lab develops test for gene
doping
March 20, 2009 (Reuters): A German
research laboratory said on Friday it had successfully developed a
test for gene doping, tracing a substance that increases muscle
tissue and boosts endurance levels.
Gene doping, the practice of using genetic engineering to
artificially enhance athletic performance, is seen as the next
major drugs threat to sport as doping becomes more sophisticated.

deal with the U.S. Olympic body unless the Americans agree to a
revised formula and smaller share of the money pie, according to a
