Vault:
As expected Yelena Zamolodchikova took the gold on
vault with two complex vaults (double twisting layout Tsukahara and double twisting
Yurchenko). After a disappointing week in which she was plagued by a sore neck and beam
woes, team mate Svetlana Khorkina won yet another gold on the Uneven bars.
Asked whether she felt she had won her title because she was more famous than the
Chinese gymnasts, Khorkina replied: " I do have a name, especially on bars, and
am famous. But I feel I also have a routine which is worth gold."
Khorkina refused to commit to the 2000 Olympics saying that she
would decide "when the clock in the Krelim strikes twelve on December 31."
The 20-year-old Russian then caused a mild sensation when she answered a reporter's
question whether she had a boy friend: "There are a lot of poeple who are close
to me. I have many friends, but at present I don't have any marriage plans. Many people
love me and help me. First of all, my coach Boris Pilkin. Secondly, my family- Mama, Papa
and my younger sister whom I love very much. And thirdly, another person like that is Ivan
Ivankov." Khorkina, Zamolodchikova and their coaches were unable to leave
the press centre after the press conference due to a large group of autograph hunters who
had gathered outside. The "fans" hassled gymnasts and coaches for autographs,
grabbing and pushing them, making it impossible for them to get to their bus while Chinese
security guards stood by impassively. The Russian party took refuge
in the press centre until a car was brought round to the back entrance to bring them to
their hotel.(Nora Schuler) |

Beam: Despite a
noticeable break on her Rulfova, a delighted Ling Jie took the gold for a
a very complex beam routine- China's only gold of the women's competition. After setting
the table in the UB final the day before, Ling Jie was up first again on beam. "The
fact that I was up first didn't influence my performance, but I knew it might influence my
scores", she remarked afterwards. The gymnastics world had better watch out for
this gymnast since she vowed to win UB and BB next year!

Floor:
Andreea Raducan capped off her successful outing to China by winning Floor
exercises with her Spanish style routine while Canadian Yvonne Tousek's
refreshingly extravagant routine didn't medal (9.9 start value) but was impressive
nonethless.
Finally, Octavain Belu let the world's press in on one of the
secrets of the Romanians' success- unity. "We have to unite in one.
If everyone thinks individually, we won't have any success."
(Nora Schuler)
