Yelena Produnova began gymnastics at age 5, and made an international splash in 1995 when she became the first woman to ever perform a double front immediate punch front on floor.
Produnova first made an international impression with her powerful tumbling and innovative exercises 1996 was less than perfect as Produnova, hampered by a heel injury, failed to make the Russian Olympic team. Surgery on her heel in Dec. '96 was obviously successful, giving new life to her career. At the '97 Worlds, her second world event, she also earned an individual bronze on floor as well as tam silver.
More recently she topped world all-around champ (and teammate) Svetlana Khorkina for the Russian national title and came within inches of winning the '99 American Cup.
In the year 2000 she had a very good start: First in the All around of American Cup in Orlando , first in World Stars in Mosco and she is the new Russian AA Champion 2000, too!
Produnova lists her hobbies as listening to music (Celine Dion and Madonna are two of her favorites), watching comedy films and reading. She says the gymnast she most admires is Svetlana Boginskaya.

Jelena Produnowa begann im Alter von 5 Jahren mit dem Turnsport und startete so richtig in ihre internationale Karriere 1995. Als erste Frau turnte sie nach einem Doppelsalto vorwärts direkt einen weiteren Salto vorwärts! Jelena hinterlässt vor allem durch ihre dynamische Art zu turnen einen grossen Eindruck.
1996 war ein schwieriges Jahr für sie, gehandicaped durch Verletzungen fehlte sie so im Russischen Olympiateam.
Nach der Fersenoperation im Dezember 1996 ging es endlich wieder mit ihrer Karriere aufwärts. Bei ihren zweiten Weltmeisterschaften 1997 in Lausanne erkämpfte sie sich die Bronzemedaille im Mehrkampf und am Boden und Silber mit der Mannschaft.
Schon längst ist sie die schärfste Konkurrentin für den nationalen und interantionalen Star Swetlana Chorkina geworden.
Zu Beginn des Olympiajahres 2000 gewann sie den Mehrkampf des American Cups in Orlando und bei den World Stars in Moskau schlug sie gar Chorkina (6.) im direkten Mehrkampfvergleich und wurde auch vor ihre Russische Mehrkampfmeisterin.
Jelena entspannt sich besonders beii der Musik von Celine Dion und Madonna), liebt lustige Filme und Bücher. Im Turnsport bewundert sie besonders Swetlana Boginskaja als eine ihrer grossen Vorgängerinnen.
