Report, First day, qualifikation
With the top world class gymnasts representing 24 countries, the 1999 Glasgow Grand Prix set its first record even before the competition started. Never before has a field of competitors been this strong. Only three weeks after the World Championships in Tianjin, China, the majority of the new champions have gathered in Glasgow to obtain valuable points for the Grand Prix and also for the World Cup circuit. The audience got to enjoy top performances of past and present World Champions on each apparatus. British Gymnasts really met the challenge with the World's Top Gymnasts, head on. Lee McDermott, who trains at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall, stole the show in the Pommel Horse qualification. He was the top scorer today, with a very promising mark of 9.725. Craig Heap, training partner of Lee in Lilleshall, qualified for the Rings Final with another world class performance.

On the Women’s side, two times National Champion, Lisa Mason performed very well in Beam and Floor Events, qualifying for both Finals.  The British Women’s team had established their place amongst the World's Top
Teams with an 11th place at the recent world championships in the team competition. Granting them a first time ever Olympic Ticket for a full team. With today’s performances in the Grand Prix, in a strong field, the British Gymnasts showed their claim to a top place on the world stage was not just a lucky shot.

Qualifikation, Erster Tag
Mit Spitzenathleten aus 24 Ländern war bereits die erste Rekordmarke in der Kelvin Hall von Glasgow gesetzt, noch bevor die Wettbewerbe begonnen hatten. Nie zuvor war hier ein solch starkes Starterfeld zu Gast. Drei Wochen nach den Weltmeisterschaften im chinesischen Tianjin hat sich die Mehrzahl der frischgebackenen Weltmeister und Medaillengewinner eingefunden, um um Grand Prix und Weltcuppunkte zu kämpfen. Die Zuschaer erleben Spitzenleistungen früherere und aktueller Meister an allen Geräten. Grosse Freude herrschte während der Qualifikation, als bei den Männern der Lokalmatador Lee McDermott trotz der Weltklassekonkurrenz am Pauschenpferd die Tageshöchstnote von 9,725 Punkten erhielt. Craig Heap, sein Clubkamerad aus Lilleshall qualifizierte sich fürs Ringefinale.
Von den 3 Deutschen (alle aus Berlin) schaffte nur Andreas Wecker den Sprung in die Finals (Pauschenpferd, Ringe, Reck), seine Klubkameraden Dmitri Nonin (E1 Ringe, E2 Barren) und Peter Nikiferow (E1 Pauschenpferd) scheiterten knapp.
