Waiting for China......! |
|
What's up with the Chinese?
That was what everybody had
been wondering since the announcement that the Olympic
champions would not be competing in Ghent.
The group would
also feature Olympic rings champion Szilveszter Csollany
from Hungary, Canada with the Ikeda brothers and high bar
specialist Alexander Jeltkov as well as a team from
Portugal and a mixed group with three Poles, including
Leszek Blanik, and two Georgians.

Rotation
1
If it is true that vault is a weak apparatus for the Chinese, we
are in for a treat. The five gymnasts scored between 9,212 and
9,462 for their double twisting Tsukaharas. The gymnasts from
the other countries can't keep up and only score in the medium
range.
Rotation
2
Liu Jinyu (CHN) shows a complex routine on bars garnished with a
few mistakes and ends up with only 8,9 points. Surely they will
drop this score. Or maybe not. Deng Weiwei also has problems on
a press to handstand and his double salto is far from flawless.
His 8,875 puts him behind Liu. Feng Jing gives a clinic in
Chinese bars artistry:
free hip, giant to double tuck, Diamidov, double pike and a
double pike dismount. 9,637 was his reward. Zhang Shangwu
has a similar routine only with an extra double salto and an
additional Tippelt. He receives a 9,675. Meanwhile
Canadian David Kikuchi scores a 9,425.
Rotation
3
Things start going wrong for the Chinese on high bar. Only Deng
Weiwei stays clean and scores 9,262. All the others fall. Feng
Jing garners applause for hanging on with one arm after losing
his grip on an ellgrip giant. He pulls himself up and rearranges
his grips lying across the bar. On vault the Canadians improve
with three scores in the nines while Csollany is not looking as
strong as usual on rings despite his usual brilliant strength
elements. A 9,625 will have to be enough.
Rotation
4
Robert Gal is the best gymnast in this rotation. The judges award
him a 9,437 for his double twisting Tsukahara. Alexander Tvauri
misses the chance to make rings final (9,337).The Chinese have
mixed fortunes on floor: Li Rongjie is best: 9,425
The Canadians are strong on bars. RIchard Ikeda scores a 9,062,
Grant Golding tops that with 9,137.
Rotation
5
The Chinese are incredibly sure of themselves on pommels.
Liu Jinyu
starts off with 9,3, Feng Jing goes one better 9,55. Li Rongjie
is a little weaker with 9,412. Xiao Qin's aesthetic routine
delights the crowd but not the judges - 9,675. Leszek
Blanik's high double Tsukahara is another highlight. The Pole
nails it for 9,687. Alexander Jeltkov fails on high bar, an
event he was world champion on.
Rotation
6
To make up for his mishap on high bar, Jeltkov competes well on
floor and caps off a fantastic Canadian team effort on tha
piece. The Portuguese do similarly well on vault while the
Hungarians falter on high bar. The Chinese are mixed on rings -
they do have a high level of difficulty, two of them have 10
SVs, but they lack the precision of experienced gymnasts. Feng
Jing is their top scorer with a 9,1.
Conclusion:
China definitely dominated this group. The young gymnasts did
well with the exception of high bar. Their specialists could win
titles in the finals. Canada, Hungary and Portugal were tame
despite exceptional gymnasts like Csollany or Jeltkov. Leszek
Blanik is almost scary, he has consistenly been throwing 10 SV
vaults for the past few years.
