The theme of the Gala, was expressed in an explosion of colour and movement - traditional aspects blended with modern movements and rhythms.

China's President Jiang Zemin opened the 34th World Championships

"The Marathon" begins with the Women’s Team Competition at 9 am tomorrow (2 a.m. GMT), and will go on until 22.40 p.m. local time.
GYMmedia will transmit reports and results ~ 5 p.m. GMT.

Der "Turn-Marathon" beginnt am Samstagmorgen 9 Uhr Ortszeit (3 Uhr MEZ) und endet gegen 17 Uhr MEZ.

Ergebnisse und Berichte sind bei GYMmedia gegen ca. 18 Uhr MEZ zu erwarten.

Representatives of 73 countries from all around the world, including nations such as Barbados, Bermuda, Nigeria, Thailand, Uruguay and many others without a long tradition in developing top level gymnastics, paraded their national flags at the beginning of the Opening Ceremony and then enjoyed the feast along with numerous dignitaries, guests and 7,000 spectators.

Teilnehmer aus 73 Nationen aller Kontinente einschließlich solcher Länder ohne langer Turntraditionen präsentierten zu Beginn mit ihren Nationalflaggen unf reihten sich ein in die zahlreich erschienen Ehrengäste und über 7.000 Zuschauer.

At the end of the spectacle the outstanding international gymnastics star of the 80’s - Li Ning, known in his country as "The Prince of Gymnastics", welcomed all participants and wished them success in the Championships which will also serve as Olympic 2000 qualifications.

Am Ende der Zeremonie begrüßte
Li, Ning - der Turnstar der Achtziger Jahre, in China auch als der "Turnprinz" bezeichnet - alle Teilnehmer und wünschte allen viel Erfolg, besonders mit Blick auf die Olympia-Qualifikation.

In Prag 1962 erlebte ich erstmals dieses berauschende Gefühl zur Opening Ceremony bei einer Kunstturn- weltmeisterschaft. Ich war dabei!!! Mit 19 damals zwar ein "Youngster", doch es waren schon 13 Jahre Magnesialuft, Händebrennen und unzählige Abwürfe vom störrischen "Gaul" bis dorthin. Stolz auf das
Erreichte und angespannte Erwatung auf die bevorstehenden Wettkämpfe mit den Besten der Welt. Deshalb gilt heute meine uneingeschränkte Hochachtung den über 600 Startern aus 73 Ländern und für die Wettkämpfe wünsche ich allen ein herzliches "Hals und Beinbruch".
