Individual men
Park, Kwang-Soo is the name of the title defender from the South of Korea. The "powerhouse" from Seoul will do everything to defend his title in Riesa. The 25-year-old Park was World Champion already in 1995 and 1997. The Frenchman Gregory Alcan is a big favourite, he came 2nd in the trios of the 1999 World Championship; he will no doubt be one of the favourites with the spectators also in 2000. One will have to count in also the Russian Stanislav Marchenkov, who won the World Cup tournament in Halle, just as Birgir Johannsson from Iceland, who came third at the Hanover 1999 World Championships, presenting quite a successful unity of strength and show. The former triathlete got the most applause of the men’s competition in Hanover. The two German entrants, Julian Drescher (SAC Berlin, 3rd at the 1st World Cup tournament and formerly gymnast with OSC Potsdam) and Alberto Medeiros de Silva (PSV München, 4th of the 1st World Cup tournament) both have the potential to come out amongst the best eight of the World Championship finals.

Mixed Pairs The title defenders are at the same time also the favourites for 2000: Tatyana Soloviova and Vladislav Oskner from Russia. The two Muscovites were also the World Champions in 1998. |
|
However, they had to make do with the third place in Halle, so that one can look forward to how they will present themselves at the forthcoming World Championships. |
In the previous year, they were the only
ones in the World Championship finals who performed their presentation
with one continuous theme also musically: Carmen. This was just as
unusual as their style: they moved very elegantly, synchronously and
still dynamically powerfully on stage. Choi / Song from Korea who came second last year will come to Riesa, too. And one will have to look out for the French pair of Rachel Muller and Stephan Brecard, who came third at the 1999 World Championships. The two expressive athletes will always put on a great show and have been among the top of the mixed pairs for some years now. The Romanians Isabel Lacatus and Remus Nicolai (No 1 and No 2 at the 2000 World Cups) are also among the favourites. The German mixed pair will probably stand no chance of reaching the World Championship finals this year yet.
