*Deutsche Sporthilfe --: Five-time gymnastics world champion Darja VARFOLOMEEV has been voted "Sportswoman of the Month" for August in Germany by the approximately 4,000 athletes supported by "Sporthilfe".
The 16-year-old gymnast from TSV Schmiden (near Stuttgart) won five gold medals at the 40th World Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Valencia/Spain in the all-around as well as with hoops, ball, clubs and ribbon. She also won the silver medal in the team competition. Of Germany's up-and-coming and top athletes, Varfolomeev now received the title "Sportswoman of the Month" for her outstanding performance, ahead of the German kayak foursome and para-swimmer Tanja Scholz. Unlike journalists' or the public's votes, only Germany's best young and top athletes vote here, giving the award its very special touch.

* Congratulations also go to her coach, the former Belorusian Olympic silver medallist in Sydney 2000, Yulia RASKINA, who was able to realise this success with her protégé through an outstanding improvement in performance!
