Joe FRASER (GBR) - most successful! |
Since the premiere 57 years ago in Frankfurt/Main (GER; 1955), European championships have been held every two years. After Essen (1979), Bremen (2000) and Berlin (2011), Germany and its Olympic city of 1972 Munich hosts now the 44th European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships for the fourth time.
After the competitions of the 43rd Women's Europeans one week before, one week before, now the men's competitions will also follow as part of the concerted event sequence of the European Championships of a total of 9 sports, which will be reflected on a large scale by the German public broadcasters on TV and online channels. In addition, the former UEG (now: "European Gymnastics") integrates its Junior European Championships for male athletes also into the second event weekend from August 18 - 21.
* First Great Britain's Joe FRASER won gold in all-around on Thurday, after than the British men's team won its second team title after 2012, and Jake Jarman and Joe Fraser have won the vault and parallel bars titles with Jake also taking floor bronze in the apparatus finals at the final day in Munich!
Courtney Tulloch rings bronze and Giarnni Regini-Moran parallel bars bronze to mark the most successful European championships ever for the British team with an incredible eleven medals across the men’s and women’s events.
The haul also means the GB team topped the gymnastics medal standings!
** Germany's SPORTMANUFAKTUR B ä n f e r supports the online coverage of modern competitive apparatus gymnastics at the top and the breadth.
♦ ECh / JECh - Summaries ...:
After team and all-around gold of the British, today all-around champion Joe FRASER (parallel bars) and vault champion Jake JARMAN added further victories, so that Great Britain leaves this European Championships in Munich as the most successful nation also in the men's event.
Armenia's athletes convinced at the finals with horse gold (Harutyun MERDINYAN and vault silver (Artur Davtyan).
The very first European Championship gold for Cyprus was won by Mario GEORGIOU on high bar, and the veterans and Olympic champions Eleftherios PETROUNIAS (GRE; rings) and Artem DOLLGOPYAT (ISR; floor) were unbeatable on their special apparatus.
A historically long distance of a medal dream on the complicated gymnastics pommel horse - since the times of a then still active Valeri Belenki (1997) - ended the Thuringian and new citizen of Halle Nils Dunkel and won a much-acclaimed bronze medal for the German hosts!
The German Olympic silver medalist on parallel bars, Lukas Dauser, however had bad luck and had to bury his dream of a medal after an interruption of his routine, after he had shown up with the highest score the day before.
.
* Complete set of medals for the German juniors!
In the Sunday morning of the last competition day the German boys joined the successful girls one week before and won a complete set of medals at the Junior European Championships:
Daniel Mousichidis - protégé of coach Waldemar Eichorn - became Junior European Champion on floor.
Frankfurt's Jukka Nissinen - with only 16 years the youngest team member first won bronze on rings and then became Vice Junior European Champion on high bar, dedicated his medals as birthday presents to his father and coach Mauno Nissinen, who had turned 75 years some days before!

♦♦ 44th ECh MEN's ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS 2022 (18. - 21. August)
After the first European Championships in 1955 in Frankfurt/M. and after Essen (1979), Bremen (2000) and Berlin (2011), Germany plays now the host role for the fourth time in the men's event in Munich 2022 (- apart from a failed interdisciplinary intermezzo in 2001 in Riesa).
Also in the men's competition, in deviation from the previous mode, medals will be awarded already after qualification for the best in the all-around (- conversely, it would definitely have made more sense to apply this to the team competition and schedule an individual all-around final instead !!).
But only in the teams competition a final is held, as well as for the determination of the apparatus champions.
In the absence of the sanctioned federations of Russia and Belarus and in the absence of real comparative values in the still young, short Olympic cycle, predictions would be unserious. One will probably have to be surprised just as in the women's competitions, although in the fight for precious metal the German hosts seem to be facing much more difficult challenges than the countrywomen who outgrew themselves a week earlier.
In any case, there will be a new champion in the all-around in the absence of previous exclusively Russian and Ukrainian title holders of the last decade. The first candidate could be Ukraine's bronze medalist from Basel 2021, Illia KOVTUN. ( ► The best All-rounder of ECh History)
* eg preview --: The field also includes stars like reigning Olympic Champion on floor Artem Dolgopyat (ISR), Vice-Olympic Champion on floor Rayderley Zapata (ESP), double European Champion on parallel bars and 2021 European Gymnast of the Year Ferhat Arican (TUR), 2019 World Champion on parallel bars Joe Fraser (GBR), Greek Lord of the Rings Eleftherios Petrounias, Irish star Rhys McClenaghan, reigning World Champion on floor Nicola Bartolini (ITA), recently crowned Mediterranean Games all-around Champion Adem Asil (TUR), Ukraine’s rising star Ilia Kovtun alongside veteran teammate Igor Radivilov, 2020 European Champion on pommel horse Matvei Petrov (ALB), Croatia’s master of the high bar Tin Srbic while the host nation Germany counts the Hero de Janeiro Andreas Toba, Lukas Dauser, Nils Dunkel, Glenn Trebing and Lucas Kochan in its ranks.
Of course, all gymnasts are looking to excel in Munich after a long period of uncertainty and we wish every single gymnast loads of success.
♦ On the first day of competition (Thursday, 18. 08.) it is also primarily about the 13 qualification places of the nations for the World Cup in autumn in Liverpool. (- !! - This strange mode has met with quite a bit of opposition in practice...!)
♦♦ ECh - EVENT COVERAGES
♦ All-Around Decision & Qualification (Thursday, Aug 18)
In a dramatic day at Munich’s Olympic Hall, site of the 1972 Olympic gymnastics competition, history was written for all three guys on the podium!
In a superb competition, Great Britain’s Joe Fraser became the first British European all-around Champion.
Marked by an excellent parallel bars routine, the event were he won the World title in 2019, Fraser showed great technique combined with difficulty stylishly executed. With a score of 85.565, Fraser overtook Ahmet Onder (TUR) who led after the second subdivision. Onder’s highest scores came on parallel bars, vault, floor and high bar as he clearly set the score to beat. His second place marked the first time a Turkish gymnast wins an all-around medal. And the party didn’t end there … teammate Adem Asil joined Onder on the podium, clinching the bronze medal thanks to a phenomenal vault and rings routine!
Spain’s Noel Plata enjoyed a terrific outing, ending 4th all-around and leading Spain to the third place as a team. Switzerland’s Noe Seifert, Hungary’s Krisztofer Meszaros, Italy’s Lorenzo Minh Casali and Great Britain’s Jake Jarman round out the top 8.
Saturday’s team final will be a battle between Great Britain, Türkiye, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany and Hungary. On Sunday, we’ll meet again for the apparatus finals! (- more below)

♦ TEAM COMPETITION
** MEN's TEAM F I N A L - Saturday, August 20.
* After 2012 GREAT BRITAIN wins for the second time European Championship gold in the team competition.
Top qualifier Great Britain had a phenomenal competition, marked by the top score on floor, vault, parallel bars and high bar. James Hall, Joe Fraser, Jake Jarman, Courtney Tulloch and Giarnni Regini-Moran regained the team title Great Britain had last won in 2012 by a comfortable margin of almost 7 points!
* The British Men's Gold Quintet!
* For the first time ever, ITALY wins a team medal in the men's event with silver!
The battle for the other medals had the audience on the edge of their seat going into the very last rotation. Italy excelled on floor, anchored by reigning World Champion Nicola Bartolini who secured the silver medal in a historic performance for the Italians!
* Turkey wins bronze in Munich after silver in Mersin 2020, but missed gold, because their vice European champion in the all-around, Ahmet Onder, had a very bad day and fell on three apparatus! So Turkey counted ups and downs today, remounting into the medal race after an excellent rotation on vault, highlighted by Adem Asil’s 15.233. They kept on track, settling for the bronze medal.
Strong 4th place for Switzerland!
Switzerland and France went head-to-head throughout the day, finishing 4th and 5th respectively, just ahead of Hungary.
Host nation Germany lead after the first subdivision and seemed on medal course after Lukas Dauser posted a huge 15.533 the top score of the day, on parallel bars. Unfortunately on injury on floor ended their chances: After Glenn Trebing was injured on floor, Germany could not get away from the 7th place in the preliminaries.
Third qualifier Spain came undone on pommel horse to finish eighth.,

* TEAM-Qualification (Thursday, 18. August 18)
Defending champion Ukraine just fails to reach the final of the best eight nations.
Germany barely manages to make it into the team final with a series of instabilities (including 2 falls on high bar, and with the exception of Lukas Dauser's top routine with insufficient content on 7th place).
There, according to the mode (all exercises go into the protocol - no strike value), everything can be completely different. The daily form in the sum of all performances decides about medals and placings.
With rank 13, one should definitely congratulate the Austrian team and its ring specialist Vizenz Höck (3rd ring) on the successful qualification for the World Championships!
