difficult gymnastics world premiere by Austrian |
ÖFT info: This weekend the
artistic gymnastics meet of Austria-Czech Republik-Slovakia in Gänserndorf was dominated
by a single routine: Thomas Zimmermann developped a new super exercise during the
summer that will open him all chances to place among the top gymnasts at the forthcoming
world championships in Ghent. As vault over the table* Zimmermann performs an especially
difficult "twisted handspring with double somersault".
Zimmermann in Cottbus: Ergojet-Test
|
The 28-year-old
sport soldier from Vorarlberg connects after the handspring and the first somersault (forwards) a 180° turn with a second
somersault (backwards): a barani in-back-out vault.
This extreme variation has never been performed before, has naturally the highest possible
start value of 10.00 points and will secure Austria's no. 1 a place in the history of
artistic gymnastics: Usually new gymnastics elements are named after their inventors and "the Zimmermann" will soon be intergrated into the int. Code de Pointage to remain
there for generations.
Thomas had already been one of the world's first gymnasts who tested the new vaulting
table ("Ergojet") at the World Cup tournament 2001 in Cottbus for the first time.
His vault creation he already tried at the Swiss championships as guest competitior. |
>> Thomas Zimmermann about
his performance: "Today
the vault was good but not flawless. The flight a little bit too low, the landing
supported. Therefore 'only' the score of 9.250. But in training I already managed to
execute several optimal ones under simulation of competition conditions. I still have
one month for polishing. The hour x will be the qualification at the world
championships on 28 October, then, at 4.45 p.m., everything must happen exact to the
second and at 100%. If I reach the WCh final of the eight best vaulters, everything will
be possible."

The Gänserndorf WCh test meet finished in
this order:
1. Slovakia (196.050), 2. Austria
(193.150) and 3. Czech Republic (188.550).
Even though the ÖFT team missed the aim of 195.00 points expected by national coach Dieter
Egermann (because of an extremely strict judging), it demonstrated a very compact
performance. For the first time Austrians have been successful against the Czech Republic,
never before they have been so close to Slovakia! In the individual all-around Thomas
Zimmermann won clearly (52.050) in front of (CZE, 50.150) and Jan Petrovic (50.100).
The other Austrians placed on rank 6 (Marco Baldauf, 47.800), 8 (Ernst Isele, 46.400) 10
(Marco Mayr, 46.050), 12 (Mario Rauscher, 45.100) and 13 (Sebastian Swoboda, 44.550) among
18 competitiors.
