Horizontal Bar "High Bar" was originally a name for a horizontal pole in chicken stalls, and was taken by Jahn as name for the gymnastic apparatus. However, ever since gymnastics on horizontal bars or ropes was keenly done all over the world. Already jugglers of late Hellenistic and in early Chinese times, and even Eskimos have done giant swings. In the first decade of the 20th century world championships were dominated by the Frenchman Joseph Martinez. So far, Kurt Thomas has won the only WCh title for the USA in Fort Worth (1979). The gold medal on the king of apparatuses went at the latest to the Finnish Jari Tanskanen and the Spaniard Jesus Carballo. |
