... a special Sports Event of Illusions
The show performances during the magic and warm November night on the Plaza de Maspalomas in the centre of Playa del Ingles on Gran Canaria outmached all previous moments! With the participation of the 3rd Spanish Channel (island TV station) the most beautiful moments could be recorded. Magicians on stilts, drums from Biberach, funky sounds from Ingenio fulfilled the expectations of thousands of spectators who enjoyed the images of the 42nd International Sports Festival “BLUME – GRAN CANARIA“.
The altogether more than 30,000 spectators and more than 6,000 gymnasts were a colourful setting for this event. The participants from 10 different countries shared their training experiences and presented their concepts which were also interesting for the local Spanish coaches.

400 foreign guests met the local people from the island – a remarkable opportunity to meet different people of the World!
The performaces of the two German clubs from Dresden and Grimma were especially emotional as both clubs come from the area which had been effected by the flood in Germany. They were invited with the support of Jürgen Klughammer and the local officials from Gran Canaria and then were expecially celebrated by the audience in Maspalomas.
It was visible that the local clubs mainly took part in the festival with young people. The average age of the festival was 21 years. The oldest participant, however, was 87 years old and the youngest one only a few months old. The examples of gymnastics for seniors from Denmark and Germany were an important aspect of the festival. Gymnastics for older people has a great potential in Spain and will be supported further by the organisers of the Blume-festival.
Quite interesting were the results of the 3rd interational EUROTEAM competition. With the participation of gymnasts from four countries (Spain, Germany, Denmark and Slovenia) also this discipline will have a good future in Spain. Everyone was happy for the winner Flip Piran from Slovenia. Their exact choreography of the floor routine as well as their tumbling series and the quality of their vaults on the mini tramp enabled them their victory.
The organising committee of the “BLUME-GRAN CANARIA“ festival took the conclusion that the development of gymnastics for seniors, the further promotion of the discipline EUROTEAM in Spain and the spreading of the festival on further cities of the island will be important in future. The University of Sports in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria took part in the FIG congress in Cape Town, South Africa and presented their festival as venue for the congress of education of the FIG next year. The establishment of this congress of education is also a goal for the future.

But one attribute overtops all other events in Europe:
“Sun in the winter, gymnastics events in December, the connection of holidays and gymnastics“.

The 43rd International Sports Festival “BLUME – Gran Canaria“ will take place from Nov. 21st – 30th 2003. We are looking forward to our friends from all parts of the World!
