championship to call her own. After missing the European all-around* cut due to the two-per-country rule (Produnova had qualified in fifth place, behind Russian teammates Svetlana Khorkina and Yelena Zamolodchikova), Produnova pulled no punches in Mexico City on Saturday, blowing past world silver medalist Viktoria Karpenko (Ukraine) for the Copa Gimnastica win, 38.65 to 36.65. Produnova, powered past the competition with 9.5+ scores on every event, including a 9.8 on beam and a 9.75 on the floor exercise. Karpenko, meanwhile, struggled on vault (8.825) and floor (8.9). The home country had its own star in Denisse Lopez who claimed third (36.9), the best-ever international all-around finish for the Mexican vaulting sensation. Cuba's Leyanet Gonzalez was fourth (36.212), followed by Australian entrant Jacqui Dunn, a '99 world team member, who counted scores in the eights on both vault and beam. Jelena Produnowa stark in
Mexico-City Nachdem sie bei den Europameisterschaften in Paris hinter ihren Mannschaftskameradinnen Swetlana Chorkina und Jelena Samolodschikowa sich nicht für das Mehrkampffinale qualifizieren konnte, gestaltete sie nun ihren Wettkampfauftritt in Mexico-City beim "Copa Gimnastica" zu einem absoluten Erfolg und schlug Silbermedaillengewinnerin Victoria Karpenko (Ukraine) eindrucksvoll: 38,65 zu 26,65 ! Produnowo erhielt an keinem Gerät weniger als 9,5 dominierte zum Beispiel mit 9,8 am Balken, erzielte 9,750 am Boden, während Karpenko ihren Sprung verpatzte (8,825) und auch am Boden nicht ungeschoren durch ihre Übung kam (8,90). Die Berlinerin Katja Abel platzierte sich am Balken hinter den punktgleichen Stars Produnowa und Karpenko auf einem ausgezeichneten 3.Rang. Gastgeber Mexico aber hatte auch einen eigenen Star zu präsentieren. Die 24jährige Denisse Lopez - zuletzt Weltcupsiegerin in Cottbus beim Sprung - wurde Mehrkampf-Dritte (36,90) und erzielte das bislang beste Resultat einer mexikanischen Turnerin. Die Kubanerin Leyanet Gonzales wurde Vierte (36,212), gefolgt von der Australierin Jacqui Dunn, Mitglied der '99er WM-Riege. An diesem Turnier mit einer Reihe als "unschlagbar" geltendenen Turnerinnen hätte auch die Rumänin Simona Amanar teilnehmen sollen, die aber in letzter Minute abgesagt hatte. |

BONDARENKO BAGS COPA Upcoming Olympic favorite Alexei Bondarenko (Russia) took the top spot at Copa Gimnastica in Mexico City, in front of an enthusiastic crowd of approximately 6,000. Bondarenko bested 2000 European champ Alexander Beresch (Ukraine) by five tenths to claim the Copa crown (57.05 to 56.45). Beresch was on track for the win until a disastrous p-bars set (8.85). Bronze went to three-time Pan Am champ Erick Lopez (Cuba), who notched a 56.3. American Brett McClure, a last minute replacement for the (still) injured Jason Gatson, and world medalist Jordan Jovtchev (Bulgaria), rounded out the top five (scoring 55.6 and 55.25 respectively). McClure missed vault, settling for a 8.95, while Jovtchev suffered an even more serious pommel horse meltdown, swallowing a 7.9. In individual event standings world floor medalist Gervasio Deferr (Spain) was tops on his best event, earning 9.7 to best Bondarenko (9.5), Beresch and Jovtchev, the latter two of whom tied for third with 9.45 each. On pommels, Beresch and Lopez shared the high score, with equal 9.55s. McClure was third with a 9.4, well ahead of fourth place Bondarenko (9.15). Strongman Jovtchev claimed rings (9.8), over Lopez (9.7) and Bondarenko (9.55), while Deferr scored again on vault with a 9.775. Bondarenko and Lopez followed (9.75 and 9.7, respectively). All-around champ Bondarenko earned event gold on parallel bars, besting McClure and Jovtchev, who tied for second, by three tenths for the win (9.65 to 9.35). On high bar Beresch, the European champ on this event, was once again best with a 9.7. Cuba's Lazaro Lamelas ranked second with a 9.65, while Lopez and McClure tied for third with matching 9.5s. BODARENKO HOLT SICH DEN CUP Vor ca. 6.000 begeisterten Zuschaauern holte sich mit Alexej Bondarenko (Russland) einer der Olympiafavoriten den "Turn- Cup" in Mexicos Hauptstadt Mexico -City. Bondarenko schlug um 5 Zehntel den ukrainischen Europameister im Mehrkampf, Alexander Beresch (57,05 zu 56,45), wobei Beresch in Führung liegend alle Chancen mit einer indiskutablöen Leistung am Barren (8,85) verspielte. Bronze gewann der dreifache Pan-Amarican-Sieger Erick Lopez (Cuba/56,30). Der Amerikaner Brett McClure - in letzter Minute für den (noch) verletzten Jason Gatson eingesprungen wurde Dritter mit 55,60 Punkten, immerhin vor dem WM-Dritten im Mehrkampf Jordan Jowtschew aus Bulgarien (55,25). McClure verpatzte seinen Sprung (8,95), während Jowtschew sich fürchterlich über seine völlig danebengegangene Pauschenpferdübung ärgerte (7,90). Einen Spitzenwert des Wettbewerbs erzielte der Silbermedaillengewinner der WM am Boden Gervasio Deferr aus Spanien mit 9,70, gefolgt von Bondarenko (9,50) sowie von Beresch und Jowtschew (je 9,45). Lopez und Beresch turnten am Pauschenpferd die besten Übungen und bekamen beide den Gerätehöchstwert von 9,55, gefolgt von McClure (9,40) und Bondarenko (9,15). Sehenswert war die Ringeübung von Jowtschew, die mit 9,80 bewertet wurde und der spanische Sprungspezialist Deferr war Bester mit 9,775, knapp vor Bondarenko und Lopez (9,75 / 9,70). Noch einmal war der spätere Mehrkampfsieger Bondarenko Bester am Barren , vor McClure und Jowtschew. Reck-Europameister Alexander Beresch liess dagegen nichts am letzten Gerät anbrennen: 9,70 und Spitzenwert vor dem Cubaner Lazaro Lamelas (9,65), vor seinem Landsmann Lopez und vor McClure ( beide 9,50).
