Gymnast publishes:
Three-time winner Blaine Wilson of the USA will challenge
defending titlist Erick Lopez of Cuba, while three women from last
year's field return to contend for the 2001 Visa American Cup, to
be held Feb. 24 at the TD Waterhouse Centre in Orlando, Florida. Now in its 26th year, the American Cup
this year features eight men and eight women - all but two of whom
competed in the 2000 Olympics.
Orlando is hosting its sixth American Cup.
Lopez and Russia's Alexei Bondarenko are making their fourth
American Cup appearance. Returning from the women's 2000 field are
Laura Martinez of Spain and Alyona Polozkova of Belarus.
In the absence of defending women's champion Yelena Produnova of
Russia, the leading Cup candidate is Produnova's teammate Yelena
Zamolodchikova. The 18-year-old from Moscow won vault and floor
exercise at the 2000 Olympics. |
Natürlich
wird Amerikas bester Turner - der Neunte der Weltrangliste - Blaine
Wilson den Vorjahres-Überraschungssieger Erick Lopez
aus Cuba herausfordern; Wilson präsentierte sich unlängst
bereits in guter Form beim Wintercup
in den USA. Bei der 26. Auflage dieser
Traditionsveranstaltung sind auch 3 junge Damen vom Vorjahr dabei,
die am 24. Februar im Waterhouse Center in Orlando/Florida
antreten werden.
Aus insgesamt nur je 8 Frauen bzw. Männer besteht das Starterfeld
dieses Einladungsturniers,
von denen gerade mal 2 nicht in Sydney bei Olympia am Start waren.
Orlando ist zum 6. Mal Gastgeber des American Cups. Bei seiner 4.
Teilnahme ist zweifellos Alexei Bondarenko erneut Favorit, wenn er
auch dieser Rolle im Vorjahr nicht gerecht werden konnte.
In Abwesenheit der vom aktiven Leistungssport zurückgetretenen
Jelena Produnowa ist deren Landsmännin, die
Doppel-Olympiasiegerin Jelena Samolodschikowa Topfavorit
Nr. 1!
