a very lovely and charming girl, indeed..." - her Trainer Boris Pilkin said, with a grin as he completed: "....but only as long as she wins! If she loses - its not possible to tolerate her! " Fortunately the capricious diva does not lose often. "And fortunately Svetlana is no sports gymnast. She could, in one of these moods, throw her clubbs and hoops through the gym!" She needs a lot of hairspray for her wellgroomed coiffure. On an average she is 20 cm taller than the most of her rivals. Svetlana is on the way to be the successor of Svetlana Boginskaja. Recently the Belorussian has been the "Grand Dame" of the acrobatic world of artistic gymnastics. At the beginning of the Olympic year 2000 he strongest concurrent - the Russian teammate Elena Produnova won in two important competitions in Moscow: The "World Stars 2000" and in the AA of the Russian Championships! The European All around title holder was on top again to the European Championships in May 2000 (Paris-Bercy): "This success in all around is very, very important for myself, looking forward to Sydney, this year", Khorkina said to the press conference in Paris, after all around competition. 4 gold medals - the most successful competition in her career! In Sydney Svetlana chrashed two times on the uneven bars - in qualifying and in the all around competition, but finally she got Gold at the uneven bars final and silver on floor exercises. In Ghent 2001 she won the AA-title to the second time and she was the first "PEGASES Champion" of history! The three-times European Champion from Patras (team, AA and bars) got no medal in Debrecen at the world Champs 2002 - bu in Anaheim 2003. she won her third AA gold medal. So Khorkina is the most successful gymnast in history. Svetlana plans a also successful finish of her career at the Olympic Games in Athens 2004. There she won her first Olympic all-around medal (silver), but in the bars final she crashed and so she couldn't win the third Olympic title at this apparatus... In autumn 2004 she declared her retirement after 10 years on top of the world, as one of the most successful gymnasts of history of modern artistic gymnastic. In December 2004 she was elected as a vice president of the Russian Gymnastics Federation. |
"Sie

Zum Glück verliert die launische Diva Svetlana nur selten. "...und zum Glück ist sie keine Sportgymnastin geworden. Sie würde wohl ihre Keulen oder Reifen durch die Halle werfen". Sie braucht sehr viel Haarspray für ihre adrette Kurzhaarfrisur. Durchschnittlich 20 cm größer als die meisten ihrer Konkurrentinnen, wurde sie mit ihrem eleganten Stil Nachfolgerin der unvergessenen Weißrussin Swetlana Boginskaja. Die galt vor Chorkina als die Primaballerina der akrobatischen Turnwelt. Zu Beginn des Olympiajahres 2000 musste sie sich allerdings zweimal durch ihre schärfste Konkurrentin Jelena Produnowa geschlagen geben: Jeweils in Moskau bei den World Stars Wettbewerben und bei den Russischen Meisterschaften! Zum Europäischen Highlight im Mai aber verteidigte sie ihren Mehrkampftitel von 1998 erfolgreich und bestritt mit 4x Gold ihren bislang erfolgreichsten Wettbewerb ihrer Karriere und tankte viel Selbstbewusstsein für ihre zweiten Olympischen Spiele, bei denen sie ausgerechnet am Stufenbarren viele Nerven ließ (2 Stürze, 10.Platz im Mehrkampf), sich aber dann doch noch Gold an ihrem Gerät im Stufenbarren-Finale holte....! In Gent 2001 wurde sie zum zweiten Mal Mehrkampfweltmeisterin und am Sprunggerät ging sie als erster "PEGASES-Champion" am neuen Sprungtisch in die Geschichte ein! Die dreifache Europameisterin von Patras 2002 blieb in Debrecen 2002 zur WM ohne Medaille. Im vorolympischem Jahr zur WM in Anaheim 2003. avancierte sie mit dem Gewinn ihrer dritten Mehrkampfmedaille zur erfolgreichsten Turnerin der Geschichte. Zur EM Amsterdam 2004 avancierte sie mit Stufenbarren-Gold und ihrer 20. EM-Medaille zur europäischen Spitzenreiterin in der Medaillenbilanz. Athen sollte für die 25-Jährige der krönende Abschluss ihrer Karriere werden, sie trumpfte da noch einmal im Mehrkampf auf und holte bei ihren dritten olympischen Spielen mit Silber zwar die erste Mehrkampfmedaille, allerdings blieb ihr im Stufenbarrenfinale als der ersten Turnerin mit 3 Siegen in Folge der Hattrick verwehrt - sie stürzte im Finale. Den Abschluss ihrer unvergleichlichen Karriere wollte sie unbedingt mit einer Goldmedaille gestalten; nach olympischem Silber im Mehrkampf 2004 in Athen unterlief ihr jedoch im Stufenbarrenfinale ein Fehler und sie fiel als Goldaspirantin auf den 8. Rang zurück. Nach ATHEN 2004 beendete sie als eine der erfolgreichsten Turnerinnen der Geschichte nach über 10 Jahren Weltspitze ihre Karriere; seit HErbst 2004 arbeitet sie als Vize-Präsidentin im Russischen Turnverband. |
